Help

2004 rx8.. no rear lights at all! The wires in the sheath that bend when you close the trunk have been repaired. Looked down inside behind tail light, and the wires there appear to be melted together. What is the bundle of wires i need to replace called?

Do you have a picture of the melted wires? Replacing the harness isnnot cheap, you're better off having someone replace the damaged section. But also, that's a really weird problem. Have you checked all the fuses?

pull the green tape off and separate the wires. See if any are broken. If they are melted together separate them and see if you can isolate them Nd then find the blown fuse to see if the lights start to work.

If they do and the wires are structurally OK you can likely just use electrical tape to take them up .... at least until you can fix them properly. They should be cut and spliced and covered with waterproof heat shrink. You can either use crimp connectors or solder depending on which school of thought you subscribe to 😉. Personally either will work in that location perfectly well

Took the tape off. Started separating the wires. There is a shiny black material "gluing" them together! I'm afraid to pull hard.. I don't want to make matters worse....
p.s. there is condensation in the tail lights at times, particularly drivers side, which is where this set of wires is located...

I would love to take it to a mechanic!! Sadly, I have sunk all of the money in to the car already.. the car was sold to me "in perfect mechanical condition...aside from needing a tune up and oil change"....

This is a common problem, even for S2.

Here is the fix for S1 taillights:
