Got to love Mazda Mechanics!

After reading through as much as I could before buying an RX8, I went out and started looking and came across a 2005 White RX8, listed at 11,000 with just under 100,000k on the engine.

It was being sold through a mazda dealership in Scarborough Ontario and after a few test drives we came up with a deal, now the deal was pending I had a few minor repairs and touch ups done, including the rear taillights. It was also pending the compression test results.

The results came back good so all the repairs were completed and it came time to pay and drive off. I also purchased a third party warranty offered from Mazda after repeatedly inquiring as to whether they specifically covered rotary engines and what, if any reason they would deny the claim for a new engine if needed. I drove the car home, it drove great, started fine and all. I had some family over as this is also my first car. ( I drive commercial vehicles daily and just thought it would be best to wait until now, 25, financially stable and all. ) So it was left idling for a while as they checked it out, then taken around the block a few times, and then it died. As I came to a stop sign, power loss and then shut off. It happened another time as well. It also had a very rough and shaky idle and it seemed as though it was revving up and down on its own. Its automatic by the way, I wanted auto as I've driven standard work trucks for awhile and they've ruined standard for me. So I took it back to Mazda the following morning, let them know of what happened, they took it and ran it over the weekend and went back and forth between Mazda Canada, which told them the engine needs to be replaced.

The good part of this story, is that apparently Mazda performed a compression test cold and not hot, and because of this and because I had it back within 2 days of purchase, Mazda has ordered me a new engine at the dealership cost. Third party warranty not being involved at all. So because of their inexperience with rotary engines I guess I end up with a brand new engine.

Now that is my story, but I also had a few inquiries as well. With a new engine being put into 8 year old parts, is there anything I should have replaced to go with the new engine, other than plugs, wires and such?

Is another compression test required after install as well?

I also heard what sounded like those little beads put on bike wheels when we were kids, now I've checked into the marbles in a can noise and they are not similar and this noise comes from the outside ( so i think ) and only when the car is in motion, whether it be in first second or third ( not 6k as with the usual marbles in the glove box )

Any feedback would be appreciated and looking forward to being part of the community.

I posted this list for another member, but it is the normal high mileage concerns for RX-8s:
If you can't get that history, you can expect to immediately need to replace the coils, plugs, wires, belts, clean all the grounding points, clean the MAF and ESS, reset the ESS profile, replace the transmission and diff fluid, replace the coolant, probably replace the coolant bottle tank, thermostat, and radiator, possibly replace all radiator hoses, and clean the OMP lines. If you do all the work yourself and shop smartly, you can do all that for around $1,000 (usd). Getting the history from the prior owner will only mitigate the above list on the points you know for sure that the prior owner handled within a reasonable mileage or timeframe. Each other point will still remain for a 115,000 mile RX-8.
No point in a compression test immediately. It has to wear in anyway, and will slowly gain compression over the first 3000-5000 miles.

Yeah, I didn't really inquire about all of that. I'll have to check with them again, is all of the work manageable to learn if I wanted to do it myself? I'm an HVAC mechanic by trade so I'm not mechanically challenged.

I'm also going to ask Mazda whether they are replacing any other parts along with the engine, maybe they're feeling generous lol. He did mention something about asking Mazda Canada for some help with other parts so that dealership didn't take such a loss.

In other words, do more or less what any smart owner of any new high mileage car should do.

Yeah, I normally would have inquired further, but i wasn't sure if 100 thousand kilometres ( 60000 miles ) was considered quite a bit for an RX8.

Did anyone have any input on what the bicycle spoke bead noise is or could be?
