Hello, im new to the RX-8 club and im fairly new to using forums and posting in forums (whatever the proper term is for foruming).
So please forgive me if im posting incorrectly.
I wasnt able to create a new post In the RX8 technical threads.
So, i just bought a 2004 RX8 GT 6speed manual with 115k miles on it original motor. Well taken care of by previous owner. I did extensive reaserch on rotarys and RX8s before purchasing a rotary.
It has ran great, sounds great, started great even cold starting it for the 3 weeks ive owned it. Until today when i drove it about 70 miles virtually all highway. When i arrived at my destination i turned the car off went inside spoke with my family hung out when i went to show them my new car they asked me to start it up when i did it cranked very well. Due to the reaserch ive done im 99% sure its flooded pretty good. So of course i did more research on how to de-flood it and nothing really worked. But during the process it came very very close to starting. Basically what im asking for is advice and i want to know if it sits for 24 hours will the feul thats flooding it evaporate and will it start after letting it sit for 24 or so hours assuming that its just flooded. Also before i reached my destination it was in town stop and go traffic for about 20 mins. And when i went to start it it was still warm im pretty sure.

 

I had a similar problem with my 04 turned out to be the starter, check my vids and if yours is cranking at the same speed when hot as mine it could be the starter.

sounds more like starter than flooding given your description

 

So it was definitely flooded very bad we flat towed it behind a truck got it to 20 mph and she went. Smoked like crazy for a while i got it worked out ran it for a long time got her revving high and drove around for a good while. Turned it off let it sit for a minute it started right up. Then i turned it off for half an hour and when i went to start it it took a while but it did start. Do you still think it may be the starter? Im going to run it even longer this time get it good to go hopefully.

 

Be sure to get your battery checked before buying a new starter.

 

****Read that "trouble starting" thread posted by RX8Soldier. 2004s had the weakest starter. The upgraded starter from 2005-08 is better, the Series 2 RX8 starter 2009-12 is best.

For the Manuals the S2 OE Starter is the latest and spins the fastest at Ring Gear/Flywheel it has 14 tooth Gear.

The upgraded (2005 MY) S1 Starters went from an 11 tooth to a 13 tooth Drive Sprocket, for Manuals.

Mazda issued two recalls for the 2004-2008 RX-8 sports coupe. The first recall affects 35,332 vehicles with build dates between April 10, 2003 and May 7, 2004.The first, smaller recall has to do with the suspension. There may be "inappropriate caulking" on the front lower control arm's ball joint, which may cause the socket to crack. If that happens, and a heavy load is applied to the suspension, the ball joint may separate, which can render the vehicle unusable until fixed. If it happens at speed, a driver might not be able to steer correctly, or at all.

Mazda's got a fix for the issue, thankfully. The dealership will replace both front lower control arms with a modified design that shouldn't cause the ball-joint issue. Owners should be notified in late July via first-class mail.


There is a larger added recall #1017E for fuel pump filter body on all Series 1 RX8 2004-2008. (see below).

Your Mazda dealer will replace the fuel pump rings with new ones and install heat insulation pads onto the fuel tank to address the concern of recall 0516J and replace the fuel pump filter body with a modified one to address the concern of recall 1017E.

Thats very useful thank you i will be looking into that.
Since i flat towed it to start it i haven't had any problems starting.

 

Usually a healthy engine and components won't flood.
There's probably an underlying problem.
I say probably because I recently had my 3rd flood in 5 years and the first where I'm not sure what caused it.
My first was right after I bought it when I discovered a bad coil, plug, & broken up cat.
Second was about a year ago when my 2nd battery died.
