Expert Advice Needed

Hi guys,
If I'm being honest I am a new driver, I don't know much about cars and haven't got myself a car yet. I layed my eyes on a RX-8 and I just think I fell in love then. I have heard and been told that they may be a little tricky to maintain for a new driver. Me on the other hand am trying to ignore this as I would really love an RX-8 as my first car! I would appreciate if somebody could advise me on if I should get an RX-8 as my first car and would it really be that difficult to maintain?

Most people wouldn't recommend this as a first car, including me.

But, if you're a responsible person, and you're willing to learn, then it's definitely a possibility. Just make sure you spend plenty of time on this forum and research RX-8's to death.

By the way, RX-8's aren't IMPOSSIBLE to maintain, it just takes a smart owner!

Thanks for that Eric. I've definitely been researching the RX-8 a lot including the rotary engine etc, so I'm getting up to speed slowly. But the more I research the more I want this car, it's a risk I'm willing to take because I do see myself as being responsible enough to maintain the car.

If you are already doing research and looking to maintain the car the biggest hurdle has been crossed in my experience. All I cared about in high school was going fast. Luckily my parent's car was very stout and could take irregular maintenance intervals and beatings. However, once you start caring about a car (once it is "yours") its takes things to a whole different level. If you enjoy regular maintenance, you should be fine. I look back every few months or so and feel surprised (almost mortified) on how naive and inexperienced I was, but it shows you how far you can come through sheer effort, learning, a little skill, and some luck.

Welcome to the club.

Be prepared to spend another $1,000+ to bring it up to snuff after you purchase it. It's a sports car ... sports cars are expensive to own and maintain. Love it and it'll love you, mistreat it and it'll mistreat you right back. By that I mean mistreat in the way of not maintaining it properly. Always drive it like you stole it, that's not mistreating it ... that's showing it love.

Thanks for the response guys, after reading through it I want the RX-8 even more than I did before! Does anybody have any links to forums for people who have recently bought a RX-8 or are going to? I think that would help me a lot

Almost everything you need to know is in the New Owners thread at the top. Spend some time reading everything in that thread and all the sub-threads. It'll take a cuppla hours but worth every minute of it.
