2007 RX8 Grand Touring six speed Manual. 125,000 Miles
While driving the car there was a very noticeable loss of power. Sounds like it is missing and there is a burning smell. Need to use a good bit of power to get it move.
Codes are P0300; P2097 (two times) and P0302. There seem to be a number of causes for all these codes.
If the issue is Apex Seals, I don't want to chase these other issues and sped $2,000 only to find out I need a rebuild.
Are there specific codes for blown Apex Seals? Apologies if this was answered before but I could not find it on the forum.
No codes for blown Apex seals. If you are concerned about your engine, the best way to check its health is to perform a compression test with a rotary compression tester. Likely those codes are related to something else.
P0300 and P0302 are misfire codes. Could likely be ignition system related. When was the last time you changed out coils, spark plugs and wires?
P2097 means post catalyst fuel trims low. Could be an issue with the cat, vacuum leak or your MAF sensor needs a clean. Easy way to check is to hook up an OBD2 tool and look at your short term fuel trims (STFT). If you don't have a vacuum leak it will stay around 0% + or - 1%. If you are getting like 5% you likely have a vacuum leak.

the serious answer is, you need to have the engine compression tested to determine that. Apex and side seals in a rotary engine are like piston rings in a reciprocating piston engine.
if the exhaust has a cat converter you should probably open it up and do a visual inspection. The cat converter becoming clogged or breaking apart and blocking exhaust flow can cause all those symptoms, which misfires from a failing ignition system will cause the cat converter to fail that way too. A blocked cat converter will destroy the engine too. This is not a situation to put off for another day.
