Misfire:
This is when there is fuel injected into the engine and the ignition system fails to ignite the air/fuel mixture. This can have a whole host of possible reasons, and only happens when there is a parts failure

Backfire:
This is when excess unburnt fuel in the hot exhaust stream makes it's way through the exhaust system without finding oxygen, until it exits the tailpipe and finds that oxygen, then igniting (fire needs heat, fuel, and oxygen). This can happen with everything healthy, because the rotary is naturally inefficient, so there is always some small amount of fuel unburnt in the exhaust, dramatically increasing if you let off the throttle sharply. The chances of backfires also increases to near certainty if you remove the cat.

A misfire can cause you to have backfires, but even with a fully healthy system, backfires can happen normally.

I don't understand your starting question though?

So to make sure I'm speaking correct lingo. Back fire out of tail pipe sound not end all... a misfire meaning is more like missing a combustion round.. not same thing.

This car had small pop, at end of revving of engine out of tailpipe. I'm about to bus so want to know all I can about her...

Your understanding is correct.

A small pop from the exhaust after reving the engine is entirely normal, as is a series of small pops and burbles. It's classic rotary.

Actually, we do understand.

I bought one back in 2007, had to sell it 2 years ago. And I just bought it back from the guy I sold it to and it's been heavenly to have it back.
