If I were you, I would get another dealer compression test and insist on being there. Maybe even record it. Even if you have to pay for it ($100-$150) it would be worth it seeing as how close you are to the warranty being up.

Just wanted to provide an update on an old thread. As of right now my car is still under warranty until May and I plan on having another compression test done before my warranty runs out. I spoke with the service manager multiple times after this compression test and they claim that everything was done correctly. I ended up calling the other Mazda dealer in town and explaining my situation and attempted to book a compression test. The service manager at the other dealership told me that he personally knows the tech that did the compression test on mine and that he highly doubts any error was done. My plan is to try an out of town Mazda dealership on my next go and see how that works. Now when they originally did the compression test the tech did notice my plugs were in very bad shape and very old. They wanted to change them on the spot but I just couldn't justify their cost to do so. I ended up ordering plugs and coils online and just did them myself.

Shortly after doing the plugs and coils I noticed a surging at 4k rpm or so and it became very difficult to rev it past 6-7k. Thanks to this lovely board I checked my cat as soon as I pulled back in the driveway and noticed it glowing red. I ordered a midpipe online as I planned to do so anyways when I first bought the car but for a short term fix I took it over to my buddies place and we pulled the cat off. The cat was very plugged and broken up inside so we drilled and cleared it out. After reinstalling the cat the difference was mind boggling, I never got a chance to experience the fresh coils and plugs when I installed them because the cat was plugged. With the fresh coils, plugs and cleared cat it was a whole new car. I immediately noticed much better gas mileage and alot more power. It's been about 4000 kms since I gutted the cat and I plan on installing the mid pipe come spring time. When I first purchased this car it was an absolute headache but now I am thoroughly enjoying it. If my engine has low compression I will gladly accept a new one but if not I am incredibly happy with the one I have now. Fuel mileage I average about 20-21mpg, car starts instantly when its hot less than a second cranking. Cold starts are also not an issue, this morning it was negative 30 celsius and it fired right up. I put a brand new set of steel rims and snow tires on and 120lbs of weight in the trunk over the back wheels and this thing is a tank in the snow. Sorry for the run on wall of text, just wanted to say thanks and update everyone.

So they did a compression test without checking the cat? That is not right. But I am glad you got it sorted, hopefully the clogged cat didn't do too much damage to the engine. Happy rotoring

Yup definitely seems like it, I ended up unclogging the cat a couple weeks later and it just doesn't clog overnight.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Mazda requires them to do a catalytic converter efficiency test (among other things) before doing the compression test, I wonder if they faked it to get the warranty work covered. I guess it doesn't matter now, if you have problems in the future at least you have a history. But if you ever bring it in again, you may want to keep a good stock cat around to ovoid possible denial due to the midpipe or gutted stock cat. although they would probably not know you gutted it, they would just think it fell part on it's own.
