I am a really big about being hands on and doing all the work on my cars myself, (Except where specialty, multi thousand dollar, equipment holds me back).
I have seen a lot of discussion about the rotary engine and how it differs from the standard piston engine I am familiar with. My question is a two parter:
Is the actual engine itself the ONLY thing that is different "machanicaly" on the 8?
Is the rotary engine (more/equally/less) complicated/difficult/stressfull to tear down and perform internal maintenance or complete rebuild than a standard piston engine?

1. Yes. Most other parts are the same or nearly the same as on every other car.
2. I Like workin on the 8 and IMO engine teardown and rebuild is easier as it it has fewer parts than a piston engine ... as a pro mechanic with a engine manual and all the right tools and parts its a really fun thing to do even if u never worked on a rotary before... just read a lot before.

Hey there and welcome to the forums.
I must admit, one of the absolute best reads when it comes to understanding the ins-and-outs of the rotary, what makes it work, what repairs look like, etc is the following book:
I have this book loaded on my android device and I can't tell you how many times I have read it just for the sheer power of knowledge it provides.
Other than that, lots of good resources here and DIYs from our own members who have done engine repairs, rebuilds and modifications. Take a look at the DIY sections!
