Hey guys, I've been having an issue with my audio the last couple years. I get a buzzing sound coming through my speakers, whether or not I'm playing music at the time. It can either happen multiple times a week, or be fine for a month. The severity also changes - sometimes it's really quiet, sometimes it sounds like the speakers are going to explode.
The only things that seem to bring it on are bumps in the road, and colder weather right on startup.
I can give the center console a good smack right next to the glove box, and that is able to fix the problem 100% of the time. This is why I don't think it's the alternator, it's definitely an issue inside the head unit.

I think it's either a bad ground somewhere, or a grounded out power wire, but I could be completely wrong.
I did install an aftermarket stereo with the metra kit, but that was 8+ years ago, and this problem seemed to pop out of nowhere years after I did that work.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has had this issue before, or if there's any other suggestions. Either that or I'm gonna spend a whole day testing wires with a multimeter lol.

sounds to me like you are on the right track.
I'd guess a bad ground or a wire has come loose. (hence why smacking the head unit sometimes solves the issue.)
My advice: pull the head unit out and look for anything that might be loose and just secure the wires again.

are you running aftermarket amps?
where did you ground?

 

Thanks, good to hear I'm going in the right direction! I do remember having some trouble with wires not matching up in the harness for my stereo when I installed it & had to move some, so I'm gonna take a look at those and make sure there's still a good connection there, and check any grounds to see if they're loose or corroded.

I have stock amps for the original bose system, and I have an aftermarket amp for my sub in the trunk. The amp I installed is grounded in the trunk somewhere on a bare bolt.

I have an 06 with an aftermarket head unit and the Metra kit. Sounds like mine is doing the same thing. I fortunately have an idea where my issue is, under the dash to the left of the head unit. I just have to make the time to address it. You will need to check the connections for the wiring and possibly at pinch points for chaffing.
