Assistance needed (Possible PCM Replacement)

Just looking for some advice really.

Recently my rx8 started up but wouldnt accelarate over 2-3000 revs so i couldnt drive it. Engine management code was p201 i think and said something about the throttle. Anyway i took this to mazda and they told me it needed a new throttle housing. Quoted me 650, obviously i said il buy one second hand and take it to them. Cost me under £50. They fitted it but are now saying what was causing the throttle housing to break/fail is the pcm and a new one is going to cost 1600 and requires both keys. I only have 1 key but im sure i can pay out for the other. My question is is this something i can buy second hand also? If so any ideas where? If not its not going to be worth it and i love this car.

Cheers guys

P201 has nothing to do with the throttle, it's an injector circuit fault.
Please read the New and Potential Owners thread in the new member forum and go through the checks outlined there. Get a compression test to make sure it's worth spending money on this car to begin with.

More common is p0301, which is rotor 1 misfire, which is a compression or ignition coil issue. Start there.

I got a check engine light on, and I needed to pass emissions so I took my rx8 to the mechanic they told me that I had to take it to the mazda dealer, they told me that I got a bad o2 sensor and a bad computer and it would cost me at least $ 2100 to fix it do I have any options? I can't really sell it because i got the check engine light on. Help

Go to some place like AutoZone and get it scanned.
I usually don't trust dealerships.

That sucks, sorry.
Rear sensor is not hard or very expensive.
The front one is from what I've read.
Idk about the PCM, maybe you can find a used one?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, won't a PCM change trigger immobilizer? Unless you take it to a dealer, they can do a "group hug" and make all the computers talk again. Of course, why would a dealer help you install used parts?

Good call, I'm just spitballing, $2100 is a lot of dough.
Idk a wlole lot about the computers, I know that they can trigger the immobilizer, but Idk how.
There's a DIY Diagnostic test thread that I used when mine wouldn't crank & the security light was flashing.
I remember seeing something about it there.
That thread may have some useful info, there are sequences and patterns of flashes that could help pinpoint a problem.

Replacing the ECU is SUPER uncommon, what actual codes do you have? Dealer could be taking you for a ride.

I don't remember what the actual codes were but I took it to a regular mechanic he basically told me the same thing except he told me the he can do nothing with it that I would have to take it to the dealer. My car drives good but it does have the check engine light on and I cannot get in missions pass nor can I sell it because the check engine light is on so I just really don't know what to do I don't really want to put $2,100 into it

If you have the car, go to a parts store that scans OBD codes, they can usually give you a little print out.
Then post the results.
This forum is your best resource for getting your issue resolved.
You just have to give the right info to get a good answer.

I mean it's your $2100. If you feel it's not worth getting the codes and double-checking the mechanics conclusions, then by all means. You car drives fine which is the first sign that there is nothing wrong with the PCM.

If you can provide the actual codes, we can help investigate further.

Before buying a new ECU, contact Circuit Board Medics. Look them up on line. They have taken care of a few of us. The 8 is not in their standard price sheet, but they can do some of the special dealer stuff.

$150 for a code reading? It's literally 5 minutes of work for a dealer.
