Anyone know what this thing is? I’ve been trying to figure it out but have had no luck. Is it essential? I’m tempted to start shaving out stuff I don’t need

Currently my list of things to do is a mid pipe, and then an aluminum rad and fans. Then after those items, smaller wheels (19s right now 🤦🏼*♂️) and then coilovers and maybe a wing for some downforce

I want to be able to bring it to the track and be able to drift with it.

Midpipe will help the engine breath if you are at the track.... but don't expect much increase in power...if anything. It will just prevent a semi plugged CAT from cooking your engine
Wheels.... you can go to 17's if you are careful they clear the brakes.... some won't. Most 18's will fit as long as you stay reasonable with the offsets so they don't rub
The wing.... that's a whole different thing. Most don't do much until you are going 80mph plus.... and that isn't really a drift speed. They look cool... but not really functional

Unless you are doing something to drastically increase the power... like turbo or SC the stock rad works quite well... and the stock fans as well. The issue with the rad could be if the tanks are getting brittle. I wouldn't go with aftermarket fans though... there really isn't much point.

My goal really is to is to make the 13B in there nice and comfy 😂. I also don’t want things to failscade into it blowing up, hence the desire for the Midpipe. I did get a p0420 code a few weeks ago. Hasn’t come back up but I know the car has 93500 miles on it so i believe it may be about time to change it to a Midpipe. I’m going to swap the cat back in around inspection time and then right out after!
The wing mainly is to make it look “cooler” 😂 plus It feels squirrely at 80 plus in the rear. Could be a mental thing. Could also be a tire thing 🤷🏼*♂️

when it was overheating, yes. I installed the thermostat incorrectly 🤦🏼*♂️🤷🏼*♂️. Those issues are settled now and the car does not show any ill signs as being affected. I now have an OBD2 reader hooked up with my phone to tell me temps. I was about 207, which I hear is fairly normal? It was only 50-60F out that day

If you are idling in traffic then the fans should kick in at around that temperature.

do you think if I track it in 80-90 degree weather I may be fine on stock stuff? Or should I upgrade? The last thing I want is to blow it up. My wife specifically told me if it blows up within 3 years, I’m getting a Steve (boring car with no thrills, aka a Toyota Camry 🤦🏼*♂️)

If you're drifting and the risk of failure is wife takes control of your car options, I'd invest in a refreshing/upgrading the cooling system. Rad, hoses, undertray. Drifting means high rpm at low speed, the worst case scenario for cooling.
Peace of mind is worth a lot at the track when you're trying to avoid driver mistakes.
Also if it does overheat you turn on the heat full blast. Not the A/C. Not sure if you were joking above.

I know the only options I should look at are the CFS or the Koyo rad. Is there one that is better than the other or is it a matter of preference and price? Also, is it even worth upgrading the fans to bigger ones? Some people seem to be saying the stock ones are sufficient

To be honest, I’m still learning about cars, so I may have been serious. 😂 This is the first car i have truly cared about and have had the money to put into a car.

Also, if you are still learning about cars then I don't really recommend an RX-8. You will want to do a lot of homework to understand it. Does this car have to be practical? If not, I think an older Miata might be better for you.

Remember that cooling for you is heating for the car and vice versa. The heat AC sucks out has to go somewhere. As Loki mentioned, if you ever overheat, turn off the car, turn the fan to the full speed and turn the heat all the way up.

My dream car is a turbo II FC, so the rx8 is a step to that. I’ve already gained a ton of knowledge on this car just by reading this forum and then watching a ton of videos on car builds and then the rx8 specifically
