09 gt

Hi all,

I’m about to become an owner again after selling my FD. I have a really clean 09 GT lined up and had a question about the moonroof. I’ve searched a bit on the forum and some general searches on google and have come up empty.

So my question is it possible for a Grand touring to not have a moonroof? I was under the impression that they all did. I verified in the carfax and confirmed all the other options were included (leather, Bose, homelink, etc) but no sunroof.

Just thought I would throw that one out there as I’m baffled.

thanks,

neil

The Sunroof was part of the premium package options for the GT in 2009. Possible to have a GT with no sunroof.

GTs without the moonroof are going to be rare.

And if you don't need the moonroof, I don't see why not an R3. I specifically got the GT because I like having a moonroof. A car without it just gets a bit depressing when the weather is nice out.

You would think it would always be selected but I could see someone not wanting it. Does take up headroom and if I was taller I wouldn’t want it either.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming that someone special ordered it without the moonroof. I agree either go R3 or get the GT with the moonroof. It's getting harder and harder to find non abused cars so features and colors become secondary priorities. Should have never sold my 05 red GT!

I am 5'9" and never have a problem for daily driving. However, if I do Autocross where a Snell rated helmet is required, yeah it can feel a bit squished.

If you are over 6', I can see how that becomes an annoyance. Also for people who want maximum weight saving, moonroof is also an annoyance.

For me, the moonroof was the specific reason for not getting a GT. I'm 6' 5" and the restricted headroom caused by the moonroof was why I got a sport package in 2003.

I'm 6'2" and like having the moonroof, no head clearance problems. In fact I had it open today for a bit!

On an RX8 it’s about as useful as 19” wheel/tire package and teats on a bull, consider yourself lucky. Hold onto it long enough and it will make a good chassis to build into a track car some day.

If you want a track car then yes, you are much better off without it due to weight saving and the fact that you can fit in the car easier with a helmet on. There is obviously no performance benefit.

For a daily driver, though, it's not a bad thing to have if you are not too tall. Back when I owned mine I have mine open all the time when it's sunny out. I only did Autocrossing for the fun factor so it didn't matter.

To an extent this applies to Coupé vs. Convertible as well. If a car come with both variants then usually Coupé is obviously better performance wise(lighter, more rigid) but Convertible is awesome to have for people who just want a nice daily driver.

I also agree that's it's rare to see a series 2 GT without a moonroof. Most were ordered and sold with the Premium Package. I find it odd that Mazda made it part of an optional package for the GT. Maybe that was a complaint was addressed in an owner's survey on the series 1 production.

It certainly was rare. Unfortunately the it failed a compression test so I passed on it. I forget the exact numbers but the lowest was 5.9 (normalized) on one chamber. Most of the readings were below 6.9.

So I’ll continue looking. Probably want to stick with the sunroof.

This is why compression tests are so important before buying one of these cars. Everything would seem normal but after driving one week then you'll start to wonder why the engine suddenly doesn't work. Then you learn its $4-6k to fix it, I could see why this would sour some people on owning an RX8 .
