Is it safe to purchase used (low mileage) coilovers, or is that an item that should be purchased brand new? It would be for street use only.

If I remember the discussion with Doc and Brian on the topic Brian said you should go new with coilovers because of the warranty while with springs it really doesn't matter. *shrug* Guess it would really depend on the deal you got. *shrug*

It also depends how long they have sat. If the shocks have sat for awhile with limited load, it'll shorten their life. That said, I bought my shocks used with no problems. (3rd owner actually)

Also, its important to use stainless steel hardware when installing aero-flares or else the person 6 years down the road that goes to take them off will have to stop and go to the store and buy a small rotary cutting tool. . . .

Thanks Steve! I can reimburse you for that cutting tool if you'd like.

Thanks for the feedback. Just planning for the Spring / tax return at this point.

Just noticed your location Gopherage. I could really go for a Firesteak from Mr. Spots right about now.

Depends on what you are buying. Depends on on your goals, your life and your wallet.

If you buy $2000 coilovers, go new. If you want to buy custom valved Motons and do not want to pay the $8,000 for them, you can go used. Keep in mind that any decent coilover Damper is designed to be rebuilt and re-valved on a regular basis (usually even the $2k ones). It usually costs about $100-$150 each to get them rebuilt.

For me....I am thinking of buying some Used Racing Motons for $1500 (all 4). Then I put $600 into Rebuilding them. Add another $400 in spring rates I like (or $800 to have a couple of Spting rates to play with depending on the track)and I now have $2500 Motons that are for all intents and purposes NEW and only cost a fraction of the new price.

You need to decide what is important to you first. Every time you change something you have labor! You will also take your car out of commission each time. If this is your daily driver, and you can not afford to be without it. BUY NEW. If you have an extra car and labor is not all that important, you can do the used thing. But only do the used thing if your goals are quite different.

More to take into consideration than simply the price of the coilovers!

Good luck.

Josh,

I needed to buy the whole dremel tool because I normally just borrow my step dads... so if you want to reimburse the 80 bucks, that's cool! But its probably on me. I'm shooting to have them off on wednesday. When do you go back to school?

In other news, while gassing up the Bronco this morning (which is like a daily thing) saw a black RX8 with grey-ish wheels drive by that looked just like my old snow tire set-up.
Had to check the plate to make sure I wasn't ripped off. . . again.

Also, just throwing this out there... Cleveland Autoshow opens 2/27/10.

Cool we go to Tommy's all the time, the kids love it but it is always busy - the Coventry Lizard is my 'regular place'. You can never go wrong with the beer of the month and hot wings! Hmmmm.....hey....that sounds good......I think I'll head over there now!

It would be nice to get a group together for the show again this year.

I'll try not to get too drunk and start flipping off cars again.

Oh yeah, I'm just always on the lookout for some decent talent.

Is it Spring Yet? I can't believe how sick of the Bronco I've become. Especially with gas at 2.80/gallon.

****...

Also, for those out in the car work... Kristen is going to looking for anew car in come next October...
She likes hatchbacks, wants a manual trans, and "prefers" AWD.

Price range: probably 10-12k.

I have her leaning away from subaru (she likes the new WRX but $$$, and I think AWD for her applications is overkill)

She likes the look of the newer GTI's.
She hates ford, which is why I always try to make her ride in the back of the Bronco.

I think my ideal car for her would a 01-05 or 05 Civic Si hatch.

Just keep your ears open if you have anything in that range. Obviously its 8 months off, but ya never know.

what's happening everyone! sorry for my lack of participation as of late. i seem to get as far as a couple posts in the Lounge and then off again. Been crazy for me but it's all good.

Dec 19th my daughter was born. 8 pounds 13 oz, 20" long. Full head of hair and blue eyes. She's been great! very quiet and content. Fusses only when hungry. sleeps about 4 - 6 hours at a time. very alert and active when she's awake. at 2 and a half weeks, she's already holding her head up on her own for about 5 minutes at a time as well as trying to push herself up on her hands and knees.

Hope everyone has had a great Christmas and New years. going to take some time and read back a couple pages to try to catch up on what's happened with everyone. steve, dont hate your bronco... it's what keeps your 8 happy, warm (relatively) and out of the salt and snow.

10-12k won't get you a awd manual hatch. Nothing in that price range. The only way would be to hope to find a 09 Imprezza 2.5RS (non turbo) that someone is offloading on the cheap.

Don't get any VW products unless you plan on going back like 20 years, because all the current models are **** fo the most part (especially the GTI)

Your best best is most likely going to be a Civic.

Yeah, I like the civic for her... the problem is that the '04 and newer SI's are harder to come by... parts are scarce because that hatch didn't sell that well. Its the best fit in my opinion, and used ones are right in the middle of her price range. Plus its a Honda... so it'll run forever.

In theory. . . Kristen's other 2 cars have been totaled because she's been rear-ended. Corolla and Sunfire... the Corolla would have been good, but the pontiac deserved it.
