Winter tires/wheels

I see there are quite a few Minnesotans with RX-8s out there - that's great to see! I just got mine a month ago, a lightly-used '04, and am enjoying it immensely! I've wanted a sports car for 40 years or so, but this is the first one for me, and I love it.

That being said, my RX-8 is a daily driver, and I'm already thinking about what I need to do to make it usable during a southern MN winter. I know I'll need some tires, and have been also thinking about a wheel/tire package. What have you found that works in the ridiculous winters we have here? I'd like to keep the cost down as much as I can, but I also want to drive the car year-round.

Any and all suggestions are welcome - thanks!

Phil

Pirelli SnowSport's here. Drove my car last winter. It was fun. Makes you improve your driving like there's no tmrw :)

Honestly, if you really can get a 2nd car. Do it. It's people around you that's hard to trust.

If you must, I was running 225/45/18 for my winters.

Edit : I accepted your Facebook friend request Nnambdi.

Nope, I'm in Mankato...and as far as I've been able to tell, mine might be the only RX-8 in town right now. I've seen a silver one, and a yellow one in the past, but I'm fairly certain they were students at Minnesota State.

AGoetz85 06-09-2009 07:35 AM

I got a red one in Mankato!!

Dude, sorry that I couldn't make it. I drove it out that morning and saw how dark the sky was so I turned around and went running instead....Hopefully next time your guys meet it will be nicer weather.

Wussy, I drove 5 hours round trip for the meet, and you had to drive how far?

Mn_Rotary954 06-10-2009 12:29 AM

Yes Gerry....you can call me a Wussy....I just don't like driving my car in the rain and then spend another 2 hour cleaning it. Hopefully next time it will be nicer weather and I am sure I will show up.

I use Maguiar's NXT version II wax on mine after I clayed the car. And I use the black bottle Maguiar detail spray (forgot the name...)after each wash. I do not have water softener at my house so the water is hard and making car wash not very enjoyable at times. It will leaves white residue on the paint if not dry the car properly. I ended up washing my car in late evening or early morning most of the time. Since I have this car, it only seen rain less than 5 times per year. The only time it gets water is when I wash it. I kept the car in indoor garage so the paint still look like new.

I use the exact same stuff. so when it rains, don't worry too, much a quick dry in the garage with a microfiber towel and the qwik wash (black bottle) and it will look like it never touched rain. :)

Yeh most likely will if I keep driving it the way I do now....

RCChris 06-13-2009 03:03 AM

I will be the one who enjoyed the hell out of my car. Although, it has been sitting in the garage a lot lately since I got my BMW.

NEW RX8 member in MN--Introduction

Hello,
I just bought a 2008 untitled RX8 40th Anniversary edition with every option available ( but NAV was not an option?) on June 10th, 09.
A little background: I road raced, AutoX and 1/4 mile a twin turbo well moddified Stealth, running the AEM ems, Evo 16G's for the past 10 years and last June passed it down to my oldest married son. As fast as that Stealth was, the RX8 is so much better for a driver's car..so impressed!
I have no experience with the rotary engine and hope to have a not too steep learning curve with this platform.

The dealer gave me a free Lifetime drive train warranty even though Mazda apparently gives a 100K mileage warranty on the engine, retro active to 2004. I guess they did that last December? So as long as I use only Mazda Speed parts, the warranty is good. Am I out of luck on that for getting a bit better torque and better mileage? The first 950 miles has shown hwy of 22.7 mpg :(
My 440+ hp 3600 lb AWD Stealth got 26mpg at 75 mph hwy using the AEM ems to lean out the AFRs to 15.00 : 1 I don't think another AEM ems will be used given the warranty for Life coverage..ah the good with the bad, as they say.

Hope to meet all of you MN owners some day!
Kim
