Anyone have issues with their power steering? Mine went out this morning on my way to work. I'm wondering if it's related to the new battery I just put it. Any suggestions? I searched and will try to reset it and see if that works.

Mine went out shortly after buying it. Its an 04 with 117k on it. I checked all the connections and found a corroded ground coupling on the PS ground wire about a foot from the battery. I'd guess a lot of electrical issues on MI cars could be attributed to corrosion.

MI New to the community

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and I bought my 2004 RX8 automatic about a week ago. I've replaced Coils, Wires, Pugs. I did a Radiator Flush. Changed oil and filter. Replaced Crank shaft sensor and reset the NVRAM AND ECU. Will be replacing both o2 sensors and upgrading starter. I also replaced the MAF and cleaned the throttle body and accordion tubing.

My 8 sounds like it has a hard start problem either do to low compression (don't want to check it because I hate to think of having a low compression problem) or because of other reasons.

In addition to the hard start (when car is hot) it idles really low in gear about 760-818 rpms: in park it idles from 864-918? about 15 seconds at 860 then like 10 seconds at low 9 hundred rpms, then it sounds like a solenoid click and it lowers its rpm. It also has some smoke coming out the tail pipes when i let her idle, not so much smoke as just rich burning fuel and i can see it coming out. Lastly it runs EXTREMELY rich, so much so that it burns my eyes when in my garage. (I'm attributing that to o2 sensors being blown(CEL codes read bad o2 sensors) and also to my 8's low idle problem and hard start (it flooding its self because it is running so rich).

Of course this could all be wrong, like I said I'm new to the community. I have it piped out currently(no cat) also.

I guess if anyone could think of anything else to replace or check? Also any other 8 enthusiasts around the Grand Rapids area?

Regards All,

Get a compression test bro. A rebuild is way cheaper then replacement after eminent damage when seals blow. Start there.

could it be that the car is always running super rich? and flooding it out...becuase after i hold throttle too floor it starts normally when hot...or would it be low compression: also just upgraded starter no such luck fixing the problem. and battery is at 14.02 volts pretty consistently.

Roads still suck and it is just now starting to warm up. I woke mine up from hibernation last night and drove to work today auto-x style dodging pot holes. I've seen a couple around here.

I just un-garaged mine a week ago. Went for my first fun drive Sunday. I'm hoping to drive it to work tomorrow (I live in Lansing and work in Auburn Hills, MI), if it's not too frigid in the morning. Summer-only tires don't have much grip at 25 degrees.

I take it not many brave the snow in their 8? I was forced to drive this winter so I slapped on some winterpros (excellent tire) and did my thing...anybody else notice a 3-4 mpg drop when it gets cold or no? Also is crippen Mazda a trustworthy ( I use that term VERY loosely) dealer for "service"? I am a DIY guy but I do take it there, curious if they spin tales for my money.

I bought my RX-8 to be my toy, so it's garaged for winter. I want it to last forever (the body, anyway!). I've heard they do great in winter with good winter tires.

All of my cars over the years have experienced a drop in MPG during really cold weather, but it seems like my Mazda3s that I've owned (a 2005 and a 2014) were both worse than my Fords (many of those) in this regard. A Road & Track magazine editor once wrote a good technical article or answer to a reader's letter explaining all of the technical reasons why your fuel efficiency will drop in the winter. I don't remember all of them, but I remember it's not just the simple and obvious "engine warm-up" that everyone talks about.

I've been a Crippen customer for just over 10 years, going back to my 2005 Mazda3. My sales experiences have been positive there (at least as much as you can expect from a dealer--they're in business to make money, after all), and my service experiences have been great. The previous Mazda/Volvo service manager was FANTASTIC, and I miss him, but the current guy is also good. I think they genuinely do have customer service in mind. You still want to make sure you know what you're doing and what your car needs when you take it in, but they won't actively try to rip you off. They will even give me coupon prices if I mention that Mazda hasn't sent me any recently.

I wish i could have garaged it but my second vehicle decided it didnt want to last through the fall so alas i was forced into it. And it did remarkably well, minus the one 14 inch snowstorm :P
Im really hoping its just the cold and not some other maelstrom of issues ill have to troubleshoot.
And that makes me feel a little better as they are the only rotary service dealer i know of within a 2 hour drive (sesi motors doesnt have an rx8 tech anymore and wouldnt service my 8) and i take my car in to validate my extended warranty i bought for repairs (ie; ignition coils, sensors and hopefully never engine replacement)

The MPG drop is probably from the winter fuel mix. I know when I run 92 octane I get 13-14mpg; I get 17-18 on 87

I hope to have mine back on the road within a month.

Geez I Never woulda thought it make that big of a difference. You run 87 in yours? Any issues with that? I haven't chanced it in fear of having MIAC. Though even if I blew out my rotors its covered, just can't fathom going without my 8 for that long. Lol

Greetings! I am in the Grand Rapids area and am hearing that Borgman Ford is a reputable place for repairs to our cars. Are there any others around the area i can look into? Im okay if i have to travel a little ways but not 3 hours unless its for major work.... I'm looking to have a little performance work done to help track life. I am new to the whole Rotary game, but got a steal of a deal in the works, and just want to know where i can look. I love the lines of the car, and have been eyeing this car for two years. Thanks for any help you can provide!!

That was one factor, but there were other mechanical factors. I see it happen here in Michigan with my daily driver in the spring and fall when temperatures fluctuate hugely from one day to the next. I have an 85 mile commute (one way) to work three days a week, and I record gas mileage in a Google spreadsheet every fill-up. In my daily driver, a 2014 Mazda3s GT (2.5L), I record both what I calculate and what the car's computer reports. I see a difference in gas mileage of several MPG when the temperatures go from say 30s one day to 50s the next. The car has plenty of time to get to operating temperature in a short time at the beginning of the commute, but even the instantaneous fuel efficiency display shows a big drop on flat, straight expressway driving when the temperatures go below freezing.

I wish I could find that old Road & Track article. I think it was a response to a letter in their technical questions section they had years ago.
