Welcome rxPete,

I've only been into service once, for the emission recall (4206F ), and I went to Ralph Thayer Mazda in Plymouth. They seems easy to work with and up front about everything. I got my ECM reflashed and a new set of trailing plugs out of the deal. As far as what symptoms to tell them, I think you'd be set if you either complain of hard starting or lack of power. Those seem to be the key phrases that get their attention.

I took my car to the ferndale Mazda to have some warranty work done as well. They took car of the stuff I was complaining about and they were required by mazda to check out other problems the cars have been known to have( gas tank issues). I was not impressed with the service guy (seems he was not a guy that had MY best interests in mind) but I was happy with the work and the time frame.

Im going to be moving back to my house in Pinckney, MI once I return from my tour in Iraq. I'll be home on R&R for 2 weeks in March.

I sold my mothers 06 charger after she passed away early this year, and will be needing a winter beater. Im looking at SUV's from the 2000 model year and up, around the 5k-8k price range. Id like to buy american if possible, and I prefer the Jeep brand as the owner of the Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer in town is a very close friend of the family. He can't gaurentee that he'll have anything in my price range when im home. The 8 is in storage with my gf's dad's 46' Chevy pickup. Any suggestions?

Unhappy

Winter is here! Yuk!

I put the 350Z in storage and took the RX8 to Belle Tire in Ann Arbor to have my Blizzaks mounted. (The RX is great in Winter so long as you have good snow tires.)

Anyway, made the mistake of not asking how much it costs to mount and balance tires I brought in. I go to pick up the car and they had a $168 bill waiting for me. Holy Christ!!! $39.00 + $3.00 disposal per tire???? I've never been charged $42.00 per tire ANYWHERE.

The guy behind the counter tries to tell me it's because I have 18" wheels. Good Lord, they are 45 series with a 4" sidewall. Discount Tire next door did the tires on my Z and they are 20" wheels with 30 series tires for $20 each and no disposal fee.

I was soooo stupid for not negotiating this before hand. (What a dork I am!) I was looking at some of their cheap-*** wheels for my Jeep. There's a sale blown to heck over a few bucks. Never again ... never again.

On a different note, so far I love the Blizzaks. I hope they perform as well as the Perelli snow sports they took off. Those were awesome!

if you want a beater suv and you want a jeep, i'd get a cherokee. they're dirt cheap, small, light (for a 4x4), good off-roader

Yep, jeep cherokee sport (not the grand cherokee will do) up to a point. Most 4x4's are useless on the street really since they don't have a center differential so are only part-time fwd which are seldom streetable unless on gravel or pure snow/ice. Any dry pavement in between means stopping, unlocking the transfer case or hubs, and continuing on in 2wd.

Belle Tire sucks, Discount Tire is great. Tip: go shopping on TireRack.com to make you choice and take the price quote into Discount .... and they'll give you a discount.

I was reading this article today:
Big Ten Peace Summit Fails To End Century-Long Michigan, Ohio State Rivalry
http://www.theonion.com/content/news...nion_rss_daily
It made reference to a song, "We Don't Give A Damn For The Whole State Of Michigan". I was born & raised in Michigan and most of my family lives there. I try to watch all the UM football games. I have never heard of this song. If you haven't, you can find it here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...0of%20Michigan
The best thing I can say about it, is it lacks immagination. And apparently, they have been using it for 80 yrs?

Hi: Noob here. I'm checking out a new 2009/2010 8. Which Metro Detroit Mazda dealer would you recommend buying the car from? Which authorized dealer is best for rotary warranty service, preferably with free loaner car available? I live near Novi. Any thoughts on Suburban Mazda Farmington Hills (Bill Cooks) or Thayer Mazda in Livonia? BTW, does anyone use the car as DD in SE MI? How does that work out for you during winter with snow tires? Any problem with getting stuck in snow accumulation or stranded with engine problem due to the freezing temperature? Thanks!

Do you think I can get away with All Seasons? Don't want to get a set of winter rims for a leased car.

I took my 8 into Ralph Thayer to have an emission recall performed. They were pretty quick and professional. They also knew enough not to shut the car off immediately after starting it, so that was a plus in my book.

Not sure about the all season tires. You'd end up sacrificing some of the benefits of a good summer performance tire. But with as little snow as we typically see, you'd probably be ok with the all season tires. This year has seemed pretty light on the snow fall (knock on wood).

I bought my R3 from Ralph Thayer in Livionia, only because it was the only '09 R3 in SE MI at the time. They treated me pretty well, actually got a great rate on my loan and the sale went very smoothly. My salesman was great, no BS, but I forget his name, I can get his name if you want, PM me.

I took it in to get my rear view mirror replaced (it was sold to me with the incorrect mirror and nonfunctioning auto dimmer) and I told the service manager about the coolant cavitation noise at high RPMs and he said "it was normal, any car that revs that high makes noises". My s2000 revs to 9,000 and makes no coolant noises whatsoever. Whatever.

As for tires, I would strongly recommend winter tires. I did my first winter in Michigan in a front wheel drive car on good all season tires and I got stuck a few times in heavier snow. Full snow tires on my RX-8 are 100x better than all seasons on a front wheel drive car (I daily drive my RX-8). You can get some cheap wheel and tire packages from tirerack or find used sets here or on craigslist. Well worth the money if you daily drive your RX-8.

I had a good experience at Ralph Thayer when we bought my wife's 3 there, sales guys were cool. The parts guys at Thayer have always been really helpful too. I bought my RX-8 R3 in Ohio though because they had a blue one in stock and were able to give me a good deal. I haven't had to take either one in for service so cant speak to that.

Mine stays in the garage from Dec-Mar

"suspension", I was considering taking mine in to have the coolant noise fixed but i figured they would give me the same exact response you got about it being normal. BS, So i just bought the 3 dollar coolant hose restrictor orifice and i will put it in myself when spring comes.

Any starting problem at all when the temperature gets to sub-zero like today? Can I drive off immediately, say in 30s to get the engine oil running, if I'm late for work first thing in the morning? Thanks!

My R3 started right up today after work. The thermometer read 10 deg F. It did take an extra half a second to start, but it's never failed me yet. You can drive right away. It's a little rough on the power delivery at first, but it's better than my old '02 Jetta 1.8T in the cold.

Im going to try and install as much of the aftermarket items I have scooped up here while im not out with family and friends. The 8 will be shipped back to WA in Aug. until my contract ends in Oct. Then I will be living at my home in Pinckney till who knows when....
