look for pics around the june time hour, we'll see. It's going to make your level of teardown look like an intake install (which, in a sense, it was).

Pics, how about I just boost up and help? I don't think intakes add any hp for the 8 so mine was not just an intake install.

The sound of my intake added 2.48 gazillion horse power. Don't you know anything!?

Oh wait it apparent you don't...your front bumper is painted! It should be primer only!

Hey, my head unit got replaced 3x last summer (arrrgh!) and now I have a mystery rattle. I thought it was the NAV since it has gotten really dim these last couple of months. You think maybe it's the mystery bolt? I would love to have some clue to give them when I bring it in cuz I'm not interested in leaving my baby for a week while they try to figure out the rattle source.

it could be but i wouldn't think so.

there are 2 other screws (bottom) and several clips that hold the radio in tight. Unless of course the clips got broken (wouldn't surprise me hearing your story) then the radio should hold in snug.

It wouldn't hurt to tell them to check there, if your rattle is from the dash area. When are you taking the car in? I will be out at MDW's place on Sunday sometime. If you are going to be home I could stop in on my way back home and look and tell you in about 5 seconds if it is that bolt.

Yea, let's plan for Sunday. I've been holding off taking her in because I just cringe when she's gone. But I've got to get it fixed before my warranty runs out ...

Mac11 is right - I think Mazda referred to that bolt as a "security bolt" Even with it out, and the bottom 2 screws out, the clips on the top of the HU hold it in pretty tight - you have to give it a bit of a yank to get the clips to release - I would guess that maybe the top clips are damaged.

"Security bolt". So people won't steal your stock headunit? Or are they that worried about it hitting somebody in the face?

Or if RSD wants to come over to my place, we could work on them both here. Or vice versa. Whatever is easiest for Mac. Just let me know.

Might be easier for Mac at RSD's place, since I'm thinking you will be coming up 55 from what you told me earlier in the week. As long as she doesn't mind the chance of getting oil on her garage floor

That's a good question. I say we have a good ol' fashioned lynching when we find out!

btw, it's not me...page 152 of this thread(for the view I have set) has rsd, bluerenesis, mdw and myself and it is normal.

I think it's just to boost your own sense of security, you know to make you feel better about yourself - since mine has been removed, I am quite insecure.

Heh, I must be so insecure I have a rattle in my head(unit).

Sunday is fine here, but as Blue knows ... all oil on the garage floor must be cleaned up. The greyhound finds things on floors to be fun to eat.

Remember I only have half the garage since the other half is taken up by someone's wintered 8. Is that enough room for ya'll?

I actually think plans changed to MDW coming up to my house as I think I will be taking a different route home (from Mississippi - details later)

If you are just checking to verify that it is there, somebodys wintered 8 should be able to do that. They seem fairly mechanically inclined themselves.

Just crawl under the dash on the driver side and look inward towards the headunit. You will be able to either see a screw sticking out of the side or the absence of a screw on the square pad where it looks like a screw would go (go figure!)

Should take ~30 seconds.

Putting in, taking out that screw should be a 1-3hr job at the dealership!

You can search "mystery bolt" to see some good pics of this - when you are under there, you will see a metal piece with 2 brass bolts one on top of another - these are not the ones - it is to the right, down a touch, and farther back (deep) - you will see the other 2 bolts easily, the hidden one was a bit more elusive (or in my case, invisible, since it had been removed) so we ended up searching for the place (hole) where it used to live...

Ok...these potholes are WAY out of hand - I know they're bad everywhere, (I've driven all thru the western burbs in the past few weeks), but they are INSANE in the Rockford area - we have one main road that has over 2500 potholes in a 1 mile stretch and half of the road has been closed down. I don't think people realize just how big of a deal this is...you could have every road crew known to man out 24/7 and not get through half of the potholes in Northern IL this year - many areas will require complete resurfacing, not just patching - I plan my routes now based on pothole avoidance rather than shortest distance. I was on 52 in Joliet and hit a spot where I was going under 5mph to get across a bad section. Unbelieveable.
