Oh this is interesting. I received the same quote from Discount Tire only they threw me a curve. They said they will overhaul the wheel tire pressure sensors for $24. I called Burt Maza Service department and the guy started laughing. No, the dealer does not overhaul those senors when they change to new tires. So what is Discount Tire pulling? Of course he said he would match the price to Firestone anyday. Well he asked if the car had wheel senors while Firestone did not which is no big deal at this point anyway. Firestone quoted a price for new rubble valve stems!! Which I knew wasn't correct anyway. Guess I'll look for $20 dollar discount coupon and see where I can go next to get the tires. I think I will not give up my summer tires for free to anyone so I might just find a buyer for them cheap. I still come out ahead somewhat I guess but still that's a lot of money for all season tires. Goes with this type of car I assume.

$1000 is steep.
Try looking into other brands, like Falken (Ziex 912s) and Sumitomo (HTRZ-III). And look into 235/40R-18 sizes.
Just have them mount the tires. Avoid the TPMS drama. Shouldn't be more than $48.

I agree its steep but Consumers Reports rates this tire over many others for it ice and snow traction as an All Season tire. So it has some good qualities to it. Of course the best fix would be to buy 17" RX wheels and new Blizzacks but that's also very expensive. I have headaches thinking about the price but I figured it would be expensive because of the low profile 18" wheels. I have the GT auto. I see the 08 version is a 6 speed auto with more HP.

If I drove more often in the winter, I'd pick these up (if you're interested in swapping on a winter set) Set of 4 Dunlop Graspic DS1 245/40 R18 in Brighton for $300, used one season. (Unsure if I'm allowed to post CL links) Not my tires, BTW.

We've got quite a few Ft Carson/Springs people on the local Mazda forums. I know they have a pretty good showing on Friday nights, especially rotaries. Here's a link to the Meets section of the Colorado Mazda Club forums.

Just to give you a heads up, we're having a dyno day at SR Tuning in Colorado Springs on Oct 25th. It would be cool if you could make there. Even if you don't plan on hitting the dyno, there will be quite a few people there hanging out as well. $25 baselines.

What part of CO are you in? denver folks are going to cruise down to the Springs together. We usually meet up at the Chili's on Lincoln and 25 in Park Meadows. We've got a sign up sheet on the Colorado Forums in this thread:
Dyno Meet
Hope to see you there! If you happen to be in the Springs, I think people are going to start getting there around 9 AM.

You do not have to take lessons if you don't want too. For more information on the school, go to Go4itservices.com.
I do not work for Go4it, I work for the Motorsport Countryclub (www.theringoftherockies.com) which will have our own track to race on soon!

Well Colorado RX drivers. I learned a good lesson yesterday in the snow. Nope. the RX is no good at all in the snow. I have brand new All Season Potenza Pole Position 18" wheels on it and the wide tires is no match to driving in the snow. Its just plowing and too much resistence and thus little to no traction. It did work out well with the icy streets this morning. So when it snows again I am without a car. Period. Not too happy about a car with advanced traction whatever system and antilock brakes that behaves like a whimp in the snow even when taking it slow. Parking in just a few inches of snow is another nightmare waiting to happen. It would not pull out into the street but went side ways. So I had to back it up on a cleared pavement to get a better head start into the street. I barely made it home. Would not go up a slight inclined driveway either with less than an inch of snow. I had to shovel my driveway down to the concrete and only then did the car make it back into the garage. Wasn't a happy experience at all but I learned a few lessons the hard way. I guess that's my hard headedness. I've seen other comments that this car is good in the snow but from my experience and from others as well this is not the car to take out on snowy streets regardless of how deep it is.

Hmmm... I generally don't have major problems at all with mine in the snow and I'm still running Khumo ASX 245/40/18's all-seasons. Sure I can't drive it like normal but babying it w/ the conditions in mind, it does rather well for a light RWD car. I usually get way more oversteer than understeer (plowing). The DSC/TCS does a decent job but at low speed around the town driving, I find it may perform a little better when just pushing the DSC button once, freeing up a little more control (allowing the back to swing around a little more reducing understeer) but still giving you somewhat of a fail safe. Ice is my biggest issue but on snow (loose, packed, fresh or whatever) it actually has decent traction and if stops/takeoffs on uphills are avoided, it's easily manageable. The scariest incidents I've encountered were being on the slightly glazed over/black iced I25 at anything north of 50 mph when the back would start to step out with perhaps the tiniest fraction of a throttle surge but the DSC light would flash and few times and the back would come back into line. Not sure about an auto but a harsh, premature down shift w/ the MT can send you into a spin on ice w/ a quickness. So you have pretty decent traction on the ice? My tires seem much better in the snow and not so good on the ice.
