The Stage 2 has a water to air IC. The Radiator side is on the drivers side in front of the RAD. It is a seperate stand-alone system with its own electric water pump.

This is a sweet system. I'm a picky SOB...and the thing is BEAUTIFUL!

Just have to sell one of the kids to buy it

If all the kits use the same turbo, I'd be curious to hear what the advantage is of using an air to air vs. air to water, and vice versa.

My impression is that both type ICs have been offered simply to give the end user the option, but neither out of necessitating one over the other...

liquid to air intercooler is much cooler than air to air.....

I want to say that I remember Scott telling me a while back that these types of intercoolers can have ice put in them for race applications....but that is just pulling from my memory here....and i am getting old...

someone correct me if i am wrong....

Yes, you can put ice in the water reservoir to help cool air. It works so well that SCCA prohibits the practice for autocross.

Question

i was wonder if the liquid to air intercooler had any heat soak problems like some other systems would have.

the liquid to air is a very beneficial system in many ways... from idle to about 60mph (i think its more like 40 mph, sorry for our canadian friend he will have to convert to km on his own) the car actually stays cooler then a air to air. The air to air needs a certain volume of air to disipate heat effeciently, while the water intercooler has its own radiator and is constantly flowing heat sink.... also if you look at the design of the kit you will notice that the distance the air has to travel from the turbo to the throttle body is no more then 1.5 feet (once again sorry for not converting ). so the whole piping system from the exhaust mani to the turbo and turbo to the tb is no longer then 2 feet which results in a few things... fast spool, no pressure loss through the pipes which results in little lag (since its a large turbo), and its lighter so you are not throwing off the 50/50 distribution.. so to me there is nothing but benefits to the water ic kit... oh and i got a ride in it too..... now this does not mean the other kits arent efficient because they are they utilize power very well and the dyno plots prove it, but in my opinion you are getting a great design, sleeper look, and little wieght gains

I always figured that air-water coolers eventually get heat soaked. I have no idea how long this takes or if it even happens. I DO see it a lot in really fast/competitive SM and SM2 SCCA cars and witnessed teams packing ice after each pass at the strip. Besides cost, are there any real disadvantages to a air-water?

well not really disadvantages... but benefit can be limited depending on speed... at some speed the air to air intercooler is as effecient if not more because a larger amount of a fluid (in this case air) passes through the fins which in turn dissipates heat better.... but in this kit specifically the water to air ic has its own rad, i believe its a fluidyne, with its own puller fan.... a very unique and innovative setup..... as for the cars you see them in you are right, a lot of high end race cars use the water/chemical ic because of how effecient it is...

heat soaking i suspect is possible but i am not sure it can be as severe... but it will happen
