transmission problems

yesterday, my 2006 rx8 was working fine until I tried to use it last night. the car started but, it would not engage into gear. this morning, I topped off the fluids and inspected it a bit. after working with it for a while, i found that it would engage into gear with the engine off, with or without the clutch peddle pressed down. if i try to start it in gear, even with the brake engaged, it will try to lurch forward but, not start.

anyone know what it could be or had this problem before?

First check your clutch bracket...do a search on it..it is a common failure point...one that has a Recall or a tech bulletin

Sounds like you have more of a clutch problem, than a transmission problem. The clutch peddle actuates the clutch via a hydraulic system that uses brake fluid. First look for leaks, then have someone work the peddle and see if the clutch is being moved. You could have a bad master or slave clutch cylinder. Another possibility is that the clutch peddle assembly is broken. If this is the case, see the link below.

Yeah start with the clutch pedal, the move your way to the clutch slave cyl. You already checked the fluid so thats good.

so, the shop i brought it to, said that the hydraulic system seems to be working fine, but the whole clutch assembly would needs to be replaced. They want to charge me around $1500 to replace the clutch. mind you, they did not drop the transmission yet.

does anyone know where I'd be able to get the parts for cheaper?

would it be better to just buy an aftermarket clutch, since im already paying an arm and two legs to get this done? if so, is there a specific one you'd recommend?

last, is it possible that I'd be able to change it myself or anyone know of someplace that can do it for cheaper?

and, i checked the clutch peddle. everything seemed to be fine and in working order. It felt fine, it was not loose or shaking. the only thing was that it looked like one of the mounts had some stress and had torn alittle.

also, the car is out of warranty for the peddle replacement
