I've searched/checked a few threads on the OEM tires and some suggestions for replacements but I want to hear from some of the Texas crew on the subject. I've have a 2004 Titanium 6MT with about 16,000 miles and the tires have about 3/8 inches of tread left. During the previous cold weather months my tires would not grip on asphalt roads. The amber traction light would light up on any spirited take off from a traffic light or stop sign in 1st, then 2nd, and even 3rd gear. Since the tread depth looks (as it does right now) OK to me I simply chalked it up to cold tires not gripping the cold asphalt roads here in the Dallas area. However, even after the weather warmed up, my traction still sucks.

Rant: I’m no physics major, but I fail to understand why the traction is about half of what it was even though total amount of rubber that contacts the road is about the same.

Bottom line is this: Who has purchased new tires in the DFW area, where did you get them mounted, and how much did it cost? Finally, any recommendations would be appreciated.

The problem is not the tread wear on your tires. It's the cold weather. Performance tires use very soft compounds. When it gets cold out the tires get hard and lose their grip. An all season tire may be what you are looking for. Personally, I'm not willing to give up the performance factor. When it gets below 40 I just take it easy.

Go to Tirerack.com and read about the different classes of tires. This may help you decide which way you want to go.

I bought a set of Toyo Proxies 4 and I haven't had any complaints. They've worked good for me in rain and dry weather conditions. Haven't had to use them in ice or rain (thank goodness we haven't had that).

I've searched the Cosco site for BFG KDW 2 but don't see them. Anyone purchase their KDWs tires from Cosco? How much for everthing?

Well, you guys get more ice snow than us, but I would go with some lighter tires than the stock ones (26lb) like Toyo T1-s or the Perelli Per Zero Nero's in a 225/40/18 which are like 22lb, sticky, and handle great. However, they are not for cold weather. If you have days you'd have to drive in the snow, I'd get some Toyo all seasons.

I bought a staggered set of 8.5& 9.5/18s,but in saving money used 2 of the stock tires on the 8.5s, leaving another set of tires for later....sounds cheap huh, just didn't have the money to go all out anyways to keep with the over all match up I bought a set of Potenza 265/35R18-93W for the rear,since these tires have good wear rating .......Its not a match as far as profile but what the hey, you don't really notice it. if and when the time comes I'll go to that next level :p Later guys.
