McKennaR, is the means in which you procured the JDM motor and harness accessible to the masses or a result of a unique position you're in?
Brother, I bought mine from flea-bay for $1200.

JDM Mazda RX8 4 Port Automatic Motor 5 Speed Transmission RX 8 1 3 | eBay

So no unique position here. Just boredom and a high cash to intelligence ratio.

This is what happens when you intake 1l of gin and 0l of common sense. Otherwise known as a "drunken ebay binge." Then one day, an engine and transmission magically appear on your doorstep and you have to attempt to figure out why this is the case.

With all of the work I've "input" to this project, I probably should have said f-all to the 4 port and gone 6 port 6 speed instead. But for whatever reason my gin-soaked mind thought 4 port 5 speed made more sense. Don't ask. See attached picture. That is all.

Like I said, the 6 ports harness is the same as the 4 port MT harness with the exception of the added plug with corresponding wires for the additional injectors, ports, etc.. The only thing "missing" on the US 4 port motor is on the shortblock itself where the transmission, specifically the long starter bolt connects to. On the US 4 port, the rear of the shortblock is "machined" out to allow the AT starter to partially bolt to it (leaving a gap). That could easily be covered with a shield like the exhaust manifold side of the engine. Additionally you would just use a nut to hold the long starter bolt to hold the starter in place.

The AT comes with a lighter counterweight, so either get a MT counterweight or get the proper flywheel/clutch to accommodate.

McKennar: Listing ended, but who was the seller? PM me a link to their account please..

Love it!

I keep finding myself having a "Vacation" moment.

"This is crazy" ... as I'm already rerouting savings in prep for my own conversion.

That sucks. I'd call and compain to them about that and see if they can cover mount & balance for you since "you didnt have transportation when you initially expected" xD
In all seriousness, this waiting is really pissing me off.. I wanna know if I can keep my motor for the swap already! Im trying to compile a complete "parts remaining" list for myself..

The warehouse shipped them the day I paid for them so it isn't really their fault. Perhaps if I wasn't such a cheap ***, I would have sprung for UPS vs. USPS.

USPS is probably the most useless shipper of medium / large parcels in the country. I bought a set of A-pillar trim pieces from Yale02 last month, and they spent 11 days in transit from Sierra Vista, AZ. For comparison's sake: I ordered my gauge cluster and shift **** on the same day from the United Kingdom and they beat the trim panels to my house by 4 days.

In this case, I ordered another 5 M/T **** and a rear fog + switch & harness from the UK on the same day I ordered these tires and I'm pretty sure that package will get here before the tires.

Anyone know which PID in the generic OBDII monitor will tell me AFR's?

1st gear WOT from a 5mph roll: (old coils, getting a misfire hence flashing CEL)

I'll take some requests for videos if anyone has them. Keep in mind the car isn't registered (is insured) so I can't drive it on a public road. I live on a golf course (private road), and thus have a tiny bit of deserted straightaway on one of the maintenance access roads on the backside of the course, but I only have enough road to maybe hit 3rd before I come up on a driveway.

Took it on another test drive after replacing the coils with the new set. No more misfires, U0101 remains however.

Ran it from first to redline in third before I ran out of road. I did not video that particular run, as I needed both hands and 100% concentration. It's a narrow road with a bit of an off-camber bend in the middle.

Nothing of note to report, other than that I'm rubbish at this clutch (as the video below clearly shows).

No hiccups, no jerky-acceleration, no in-gear rev limits or anything like that. It's not a particularly fast car, but it gets out of it's own way.

True test will be logging AFR's whenever my AP gets here, and who knows when that will be.

Until then, even with the CEL I'd feel comfortable daily driving this car. Which is nice, because that's the intent once it gets out to CA.

Keep those PM's / replies coming if you have any questions about this transplant.

I'll leave you with a pic of the car as it sits today and a video of a 5 - 60mph roll. As I mentioned above, I'm not 100% used to this particular gearbox / clutch yet, hence the awful 1 - 2 shift.

Cheers,

Ryan

You are correct, Sir, no limp mode with the A/T PCM. Just the persistent U0101.

Go forth, be fruitful, swap in a proper gearbox.

Awesome, I'm going to see if I can coax my Autel into logging those PIDs.

Thanks again.

Thanks.

Might be worth noting that cruise control doesn't work right now, though no DTC pertains to it. Cruise master pops up on the dash, but at no time or speed will cruise work.

After searching, I can't figure out whether these cars are like my Subaru's wherein when the CEL is illuminated, cruise is automatically disabled.

Thoughts?

The only PIDs from that list the AuTel will log and graph in real time are:
LTFT

STFTB1S4 (or one of those BxSx PIDs)
Absolute Load(%)
Cat Temp

No AFR / WAFR or fuel pressure.

Torque is currently INOP now too because I... uh... may or may not have broken the ELM 327 the other day in my haste to exit my Subaru into which it was plugged.

I've hit the point in the budget where I either have to sell more parts (which nobody is buying) or choose between a new rear bumper skin and an access port... or sleeping on the couch when the wife gets our joint account statement at the end of this month and sees that I bought both.

Such is the life of a car addict.

So uh, if anyone's looking for some sweet, sweet 4 port parts goodness, pop on over to the For Sale forum and fund the purchase of my AP by buying my stuff. On an unrelated note, anyone need a kidney?

My mail guy must think I'm a heroin addict or something... every time I get packages from the UK they show up wrapped in a black trash bag surrounded what looks like half a roll of tape.

This was my 2nd 5 M/T **** and a rear fog setup.

**** is in the car, rear fog is waiting on a good rear bumper skin so I can install it.

I think I just inadvertently converted the car to a standard power Euro market RX8 with the 4 port 5mt and rear fog. I mean, the 4 port 5mt was on purpose, but it originally wasn't my intent to replicate a standard power euro car.

Oh and until I can find the correct radio and cruise control buttons from an M/T steering wheel, electrical tape will cover the "down" a/t paddle shift buttons. I already removed the up paddles.

If I were going for a proper euro 192ps replica, I'd probably get the blank panel that covers where the cruise control buttons are on the USDM cars, as my cruise doesn't work now (yet?) and as far as I know, cruise wasn't offered as an option on the euro cars.

Still running the A/T PCM, runs fine. Cruise control doesn't work, but not sure if that's a broken switch on the steering wheel or something with the A/T PCM. Reading RR's older PCM threads indicates he had an issue with the cruise early on, but that it "healed itself" without him having to wire-in the clutch-cruise cancel switch. Mine hasn't healed itself yet...

Where did you end up sourcing your gearbox?
