TX Not happy with tuning options in Houston

Do NOT even waste your time with these shops. I wanted to get my Mazsport Type I kit installed at JTran because I heard they were good. Scott from Mazsport asked me to have them call him so he could get a feel for whether or not they knew what they were doing and to go over a few particulars about the kit.

Well, JTran refused to call him even though they told me to my face they would and took his number down. Johnny Tran himself told me he could install the kit in 8 hours. So they quoted me for 10!

They also told me they could tune my car with my Cobb and come to find out, they don't even have the software to do it! Waste of my time and a trip!

They also quoted me an hour ($90) just to install the A-pillar gauge pod w/o gauges! This place is NUTS. Johnny needs better management if he's as good as I hear he is.

I e-mailed Mike from Maz-max and he said all turbo kits blow up RX-8s. I told him that's because he doesn't know how to tune...

Looks like I'll be driving to Tampa to see Scott unless ASAA can impress me somehow. I'll check them out tomorrow.

Anybody else have any opinions on this?

I actually read that and a ton of other threads before buying and decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was very quick and responsive with all of my questions. He shipped every single thing as promised and very quickly. I was very happy with the kit, but now I need to get it installed. I personally think Scott has been great so far. I've heard his tuning is great as well...

Maybe I have good luck with Jtran since my friend knows him. Sucks to hear that and yes Mazmax won't be touching my car unless its some OEM parts replacement.

Jtran can tune the RX8 on the COBB. You just have to download the ATR software and let him take a look at it.

I think we got your point...no need to bump older threads. Your thread is already enough.

Plus like any shop...some would work in your favor and some won't. Find another one or make a trip to one.

Big mouth behind your computer screen there. I'll see you at the next local RX8 meet and you can remind me about my ethics then...

The nice guy you are dealing with straight up stole from other members here. There is no side to his story, that is why he is no longer here (probably is actually) and that is why he was sued, went out of business, etc.

We (I) are trying to help you out man, I'd hate to see you get ripped off from someone who took advantage of many good people on this forum.

But if you want, you can come up to SA and we can install your turbo kit, talk about my big mouth, throw down, whatever us Texas boys are always able to work **** out one way or another
Look, I got a little excited about the whole personal ethics comment. I am not trying to support any thief at all. I have read the stories and heard all the bad and some good. I would actually rather not go to Tampa, but the first couple shops here turned me off. It was actually nice of you to offer the install, I hope you didn't do that just to make me look like the *******! I hear MM is really sick with his tunes. I have his base map installed right now and made a huge difference over stock... Sorry for trying to bite your head off. Texas is awesome BTW.

I have the Mazsport Type I kit. It has a Precision Turbo T67, huge intercooler, Greddy Type R BOV, Tial 44mm external waste gate, all stainless steel tubing, motor mounts, battery relocation tray, fuel injectors, Greddy Profec B Boost controller, this canister trio thing (air separator, oil catch can, and I think windshield washer reservoir), and I think that's about it. All couplings and hoses are there. All hardware too. I just don't think I'm brave enough to tackle it myself. I would love to have help doing it so I can learn something.

What are you doing about tapping the oil pan? Are you going to premix or run the SOHN or both? Have you thought about any of the Mazmart cooling pieces and the BHR ignition kit? Personally I would address all of the reliability mods first before installing the kit.
Correct, it's manifold mounted and I have that part too. I have no idea about tapping into the oil pan or running premix. I don't even know what SOHN is. I was told to run 20W50 to keep the motor cooler. I also have colder running spark plugs. What cooling pieces would you recommend? I have heard BHR ignition kit is awesome, but running out of funds. I have about $2k set aside for install and tuning costs... that's about it. What are your suggestions?

Read SOHN:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...highlight=sohn

The oil pan needs to be tapped for the oil line to the turbo (turbo is cooled by oil). Running a turbo kit will cause you to run hotter when pushed hard so a secondary or upgraded radiator is recommended. Mazmart also makes a upgraded water pump and thermostat as well. The BHR kit is a must for any FI application, IMO.

I have turbo ed a couple of previous cars and trust me when I say, proper prior planning. Spending a little now will save you a lot later. Get your car right 100% in preparation for the turbo. Cooling, ignition, exhaust, SOHN, verify compression, get organized in terms of installation, and setup tuning arrangements with MM.
I actually had brand new engine dropped in about 4k miles ago because the compression was too low! You are right though... I need to do some more research and the cooling has been my biggest concern because of where we live. Looks like I will have to put off this install for a while. Is your current 8 boosted? And What would you need for compensation to help me do this the right way?

I see no reason to take the car all the way to Florida when Rotary Performance in Dallas is much closer and more than capable.

The customer was not happy with the pricing structure, and we didnt necessarily want his business at our shop unfortunately.

Thank you
