If you are coming on Sunday you should swing by Gotham Racing for the open house. Should be fun...

We've also got the install party this weekend. It's usually fun, whether or not you have something to install. I just like to watch anyway.

Thanks for the reminder on Gotham's open house Harry. I almost forgot!!

Argh! I'm really busy this weekend, but really want to see the Kabura if they bring it to the DAS.
]
We'll probably skip it for the first time in a couple of years.

FYI-Parking and traffic may be a nightmare.

I was still somewhat thinking about going, but this pretty much clenches it, as I'm not a huge fan of navigating downtown anyway.

From Dallas Morning News:

'Mega-rally' posing a dilemma for downtown
Dallas: Churches, events, merchants alter plans for immigration march

07:32 AM CDT on Friday, April 7, 2006
By KAREN ROBINSON-JACOBS and TERRY BOX / The Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has canceled its Sunday concert, but the giant auto show promises to be open at the convention center. Downtown churches are telling parishioners to come early for services. And restaurants all across town are bracing for workers who may skip their shifts.

That's just a sampling of the fallout from a pro-immigration "mega-rally" Sunday, expected to draw more than 20,000 people, although city officials are preparing for up to 200,000 marching from Ross Avenue to City Hall.

The protest – and its potential for massive tie-ups on the roads and snarled mass transit lines – has played havoc with the usual lineup of spring events downtown, forcing organizers to scramble on whether they should reschedule or go ahead in the face of one of the largest gatherings in Dallas history.

"We'll probably have about as many people at the show as we have protesters," said Drew Campbell, president of the New Car Dealers Association of Metropolitan Dallas, hosting the Dallas Auto Show that concludes at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Dallas Convention Center – across from City Hall.

He said some visitors may decide not to come to the show, but he doesn't expect any problems and has talked to police, who are deploying 300 officers for the march – double the force used during Texas-OU game festivities.

"We're just getting out of the way of the professionals so they can do their jobs," Mr. Campbell said. "I'm very confident that it will come off without a hitch."

At the Meyerson

The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, a block north of the rally's starting point on Ross Avenue, wasn't so sure, especially because of possible traffic woes, and it dropped its Sunday music performance.

But the Dallas International Festival organizers say their show will go on. The festival – starting at 2 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre on Elm Street – features an array of arts groups.

"It's impossible to cancel," said Anne Marie Weiss-Armush, president of the DFW International Community Alliance. "We booked the date 20 months ago, and we've been organizing for six months."

The three art museums in the downtown Arts District plan no changes: the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Crow Collection of Asian Art.

Major downtown churches are applying a variety of strategies – mostly telling parishioners to come early for services on Sunday.

First Baptist Church of Dallas gave out fliers with the march's route to members attending its Wednesday night events. Churchgoers were told to arrive early for the 11 a.m. service and not to park on the street.

First Methodist Church of Dallas is less than two blocks from the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Ross Avenue, where the march begins. It will have signs welcoming the marchers but wants to maintain a normal day of worship, said facility manager Rusty Nickols

Restaurants prepare

Dallas-Fort Worth restaurateurs, faced with a potential labor shortage because of workers going to the rally, are also unsure of what will happen.

Many are trying to straddle a spaghetti-thin line, practicing compassionate cooperation for those who take part but also needing the staff to keep their operations running.

"They could cripple me," said businessman Joe Michael Ramirez, referring to the Sunday rally and calls for a walkout Monday of Hispanic employees in some cities.

"I'm really preoccupied with it. I have a sense of uncertainty the closer it gets," said Mr. Ramirez, senior vice president of Dallas-based Los Lupes Enterprises Inc., which runs a chain of seven restaurants.

Mr. Ramirez, a fourth-generation Mexican immigrant whose company has 100 workers – all but 10 percent Hispanic – said he's talked with the owner of a local pizzeria who planned to offer incentives to keep workers at their stations.

Mr. Ramirez said he had told workers who are scheduled to work Sunday that if they don't show, it will count as an unexcused absence with no pay.

Several restaurateurs said they put on notice staffers not regularly scheduled Sunday that they might be pressed into service.

Others have tried to give anyone who asks the day off. And still others have offered to let a few off to represent the many, said John Gay, a senior vice president with the National Restaurant Association.

"We're not for walkouts, but we do understand and sympathize with the goals" of the protesters, said Mr. Gay, co-chairman of a business trade group, the Essential Worker Immigrant Coalition. It, too, is pushing for immigration changes.

"We're on the same side as workers and organizers in the goals. But this particular action, when it's disrupting business, we're not in favor of that."

Not all restaurateurs see the demonstration as a potential money loser.

Tom Landis, who owns five local Texadelphia and Pizza Patron franchised restaurants, said he plans to attend Sunday's rally – and sell pizzas.

He said he offered to shutter some of his stores to allow workers to attend the rally. They declined.

"My employees said, 'We want the Hispanic community to be seen as people that want to work hard,' " he said.

Staff writers Jeffrey Weiss, Jason Trahan, Norma Cavazos, Mike Daniel and Nancy Daniel contributed to this report.

I'm sure if you are riding the train to convention center it won't be so bad. Just park up near mockingbird/75, and pay $1 to ride the train all the way.
You may want to call DART to see how their schedule will be with the parade.

I went to the autoshow today (alone but still had fun) and I dont know what all the mess about traffic was... I was just fine (and got plenty of looks in my freshly zaino'd Black 8)

I just came in 183 to 35E S, to 45 and exited Griffen... it took me 5 minutes to park and get inside the building (granted parking was 8 bucks) but I was literally a stones throw from the one of the main entrances.

I took some pics, ill post them later if anyone likes
