Pretty good guy - Adam at RX7 specialties

I was in need of a new (used...) rotor housing, and a resurfacing for one of mine. I reached out to RX7 Specialties (I have seen them referred to by at least 3 different names: rotaryengine.com, RX7 Specialties, and REC, which I think is short for the first one). Anyways, I reached out, and Adam wrote me back very promptly. I exchanged a few emails with him, and sent him the pictures of my housing (only one of mine was only remotely usable). He told me that it would qualify for a resurfacing, but that the edge wear might cause slightly lower compression and lackluster performance. He then mentioned that he had 2 housings he could sell me for a decent price that were in "way better" condition then the housing that I had.

I told him I would like to purchase the housings that he had, and he told me to send a paypal address. I did. He then sent a paypal invoice for the amount, and after I paid, he had the housings shipped out within 2 days. They arrived relatively quickly, and I was a little bit disappointed with the packaging. The box was basically falling apart, and had been wrapped a few times in duct tape. Inside this box, there were 2 other boxes containing the housings. There was not really very much packing material at all (basically none...), and not that it matters all that much, it is just a chunk of aluminium in the end, but still, a little disappointing. Also, one of the housings was in a box that a clutch had previously, as it was covered in images of a clutch...

The housings appear to have been blasted with a very fine grit of glass beads, and the outside finish is quite nice. While I have never seen rotor housings other then these, the quality of the resurfacing seems to be very good. I was a bit surprised to find more edge wear on the housings then I expected... see the picture

you cannot see it very clearly in the picture, but it is there. I am well aware of the fact that these are used housings that have been resurfaced, and will not be perfect, but I guess I expected a little bit more when he said they were in "way better" condition then the housing that I had. If I were to look closely, I think the in most places, my better housing actually has less edge wear then the ones he sent me... Whatever, I am going to use them anyways... Oh, and what looks like chatter marks in the picture, you cannot feel that at all.

Throughout this whole process, Adam had been awesome with communication. He usually responded to all my emails within less than an hour of my sending them, even at late hours of the night. When I received the housings, I sent him this email to tell him that I had received them, and I also mentioned that I was a bit disappointed with the amount of edge wear:

Hi Adam,
Just wanted to give a quick update. I received the housings today, and they look great! The only thing that I noticed is there does appear to be a significant amount of edge wear, and some minor flaking. I just wanted to make sure this would be ok…

I received this rather angry sounding email a day later:

This is what is avail for what you spent and BTW its not significant...its minor...especially compared to what most guys send for resurfacing...these look like new compared to those second and third rate housings. You'll be fine

I am not complaining, but I could not help but be a bit surprised by the sudden change of tone...

Overall, the experience was good, the communication was outstanding, and the final product was, although a bit less then I expected, pretty good.
