With that said, the cleanup cost is estimated to be around 1 billion by some, others state it will be 5 billion when it's all said and done.

If true, BP can wipe their *** with that amount of cash. Furthermore BP doesn't owe a lot of money, so they could borrow it if they had to.

On the other hand, some people think this is going to end up costing them 80+ billion. I wouldn't be as optimistic on the company if it is that far in the red.
If it costs anymore than 5 or so billion the company could be in trouble. People are too quick to assume that BP has 5 billion laying around to just hand out for lawsuits...come on people. It's a public company. It's only worth what investors are willing to pay per share and if it has a ton of lawsuits totaling over 5 billion....how long before it's worth nothing more than it's assets?

Besides, you don't want to bankrupt them or they can't pay back the clean up costs.

This guy has a very interesting comment about the BP situation. He claims there is no way to contain it, and the entire thing will leak till it runs out.

Here is the post, you'll note he has a lot of research and details to back it up - it's lengthy but worth looking at if you're interested in the topic:

My dad worked at Halliburton all his life. He managed oil rigs and was personally involved in containment of blowouts. I've sent him the article to see what he says.
