'85 Ford Tempo I-4 (purchased in 1996)
Decent first car for a 16 yr old, ran well until someone rear-ended it.

'90 Integra LS Coupe (purchased in 1997)
Great car, my parents have it now. This car is a target for vandalism though. It has been broken into 4 times now. Must be the dark tint. Exhaust totally rusted--tailpipes are crumbling.

'92 Mitsubishi 3000GT base (traded Integra to my dad for it in 1999. I just recently loaned it to my brother for the summer. It was a capable winter car for me this year.)
A great-looking car IMO. More-than-adequate low-end torque, but heavy and lumbered around corners. It destroyed my MT RX-8 in a short race to 50, but my wife was driving the 8 and didn't launch it well.

By the way, in a review about the Navigator, one writer claimed it had awful handling(very true), and the seats had "all the lateral support of french toast". Ha. He was right. I now look up with pity at the fools in Stupid Useless Vehicles. Peace.

Maybe I am a little biased, but the Navigator is great for what it is. Who buys a truck of that size for handling and lateral seat support? If you want a performance SUV, get a BMW X5 or Porshe Cayenne, but the Navigator is by no means meant to compete with those vehicles. I'm assuming 8is>enuff had a bad experience with his Navigator, but for the most part owners of Navigators are extremely satisfied... at least according to JD Power and Ford's internal quality surveys. If you don't like SUVs, or Stupid Useless Vehicles, as you call them, that's fine. But there's no reason to start bad-mouthing the Navigator regarding performance characteristics it wan't even intended to have.

By the way, I once detested SUVs as well. That is, until we leased an '04 Mountaineer Premier for my wife. It's a great vehicle to drive, and all the hype about winter weather performance of SUVs (4x4/AWD) is absolutely true. You won't believe it until you've actually driven one in snow or ice.

Now, my wife looks down from her Mountaineer and pities me, the fool who bought an RX-8 and attempts to drive it with stock tires in the snow and ice here in D-town. Of course, there's nothing better than driving my 8 from April through October. I guess 7 out of 12 months of enjoyment isn't too bad. I really wish I had a truck for the winter though.

The truth is you can get the benefits or AWD or 4WD on everything from sedans to sports cars to wagons nowadays. You didn't mention anything about cargo capacity or off-road ability, which are the true advantages of SUV's over the above-mentioned vehicles. The truth is that most people don't use either of these feature on a day-to-day basis, if at all.

The truth is that I loved my Explorer, and used it off-road often, but with SUVs such as the Navigator + Expedition et al, these trucks are getting too big for your average driver to control, as well as being too big for other drivers to see around. If I had my way, you'd need to take obstacle-avoidance and parking tests IN THESE VEHICLES if you plan on driving anything over 5000lbs.

This is a condensed version of my anti-SUV thoughts. Didn't mean to get off on a rant, if I did.

8is>enuff, you make some good points. However I'd like to add a few things. Most SUVs come standard with big tires that are great for the snow and ice and add ground clearance. This can really be noticed during turning and braking. Many of the non-SUV AWD vehicles come with tires that are marginal at best for winter conditions. As it has been pointed out in the wheel & tire forum, even an AWD sedan with performance-oriented tires will be ineffective in snow or ice.

Also, I think you underrate the advantages of the cargo capacity. I would guess that most people would make use of this capacity at least 2-3 times annually, which IMO is much better than borrowing, or even worse, renting a truck. Our SUV has been extremely useful (for both carrying cargo and making use of the 7-passenger seating) on many occasions, and we've only had it since November.

I agree that the larger SUVs can be difficult to maneuver and see around, but if someone is capable of handling one, should we penalize him/her just because there are people out there who really shouldn't be driving one? Many people really need the passenger room that these big SUVs provide, but dread the stigma that comes with driving a minivan. I can understand why they'd want these vehicles.

Sorry for being argumentative. I just got the impression that you were bashing the Navigator specifically, rather than large SUVs as a class (including Suburban, Sequoia, Hummer, etc.)

Glad to see you're one of the people who use your SUV as it was meant to be used. Now you just need to get your wife to go off-roading some time. (If I knew how to use a smilie, I'd use one here).
Anyway, a lot of SUV's come with all-season tires (comfort-biased), but I agree that they're better in the snow, what with the complicated 4WD systems and whatnot.
And on an ending note, I don't think making people who drive these vehicles take an extra test should be considered punishing them, rather protecting me and the rest of the drivers sharing the road by ensuring they (SUV drivers) know how long it takes to stop or turn, or do both in vehicles of that size. Then again, if I had my way, it would be a lot harder to get a license in the first place.
BTW, I liked the Navigator for what it was, as you said, but it was the only large SUV I have had experience with, so the french toast quote was funny. And I agree that the Stupid Useless Vehicle comment was uncalled for, but it was my lame attempt to be funny while sitting here at work. I will hereby refrain from any attempts to be funny until the funniness of suck joke is verified by an independent source.

Hehe. No need to refrain from using humor, but that's just the nature of posting on forums and writing e-mail--sometimes your tone is impossible to get across. An innocent comment is interpreted by some as an attack, and vice versa. Anyhow, this turned out to be a worthwhile discussion I believe. Sorry for jumping all over your comment!

Here's my list, since I didn't post it in my opening thread.

'97 Chrysler Sebring Conv. JX (3 weeks)
'03 Hyundai Tiburon GTV6 (Michigan Lemon Law ~ Transmission) (11 months)
'04 Saab 9-3 2.0t (Michigan Lemon Law ~ ECM failures) (1 month)
and currently...
'04 Mazda RX-8

Overall, I like the RX-8 the best. I liked the 2-door aspect of my Tiburon, and the build quality of my Saab. I know I will never buy a Hyundai again, and for sure not a Saab. Saab's are extremely overpriced, and why would you buy a BMW for the same $? This is my first RWD car, and I definately like driving fast, but not in the snow.

Troy J.
2 lemons in a year? That has got to suck!

1994 Mustang Cobra! Production #94-1978. It still has the factory SVT Plaque on the engine. I needed a new sports car, but don't like the new mutangs. Got my new RX-8 on Saturday and loving it! Anybody in the market for an excellent used muscle car?

Talking

My new RX-8 (getting it in a couple of days) is replacing our old '91 Integra with 200,000 kms (125,000 mi) on it.

The Integra has been our second car for years. Our primary car was a 97' Maxima, 2000 Audi A4 and our latest is a 2003 Audi Allroad (road going Panzer).

My wife tends to drive the "good" car and I've been stuck driving the old and busted Integra. But no more!!! Can't wait for the "8"!
