SA-D Matt, I think the SA-D's has the lowest compression ratio out of any new diesel made.
I cant help thinking that this excessive fuel wash of raw diesel flowing past compression and or piston oil rings straight into the oil pan/sump is what is contributing to the very early grounding down of the camshaft lobes etc as there is no lubrication from engine oil, only raw diesel as a cutting agent...!!
IMO Mazda has to completely re-think and re-design the pistons and rings in the 2.2.
Having to renew engine oil and filter every 1000kms or 600 miles is not exactly ideal, and would not go down well in the US of A's motoring public.
Too early to tell if the new 1.5l SA-D in Mazda 2 and CX-3 has the same issues.

About 325,000 VWs have the first-generation 2.0-liter diesel, while 90,000 use the second-generation engine, including the 2012 Passat diesel, according to a VW spokeswoman. About 67,000 vehicles from the 2015 model year forward use the third-generation diesel engine. The third-generation engines do meet emissions standards and can be made compliant with a software change alone, Horn said.
Customers receiving repairs should expect to maintain the EPA fuel economy ratings on their vehicles after receiving a fix, though performance may be impacted, Horn told lawmakers.
Repairs might take 5 to 10 hours on the older cars needing hardware changes, Horn said. All told, it could be more than a year until all the repairs are complete, citing the low rate of recall participation in the U.S. and other complexities, Horn said.

I kept saying that the ones without scr/urea would need it installed. That's just the confirmation now.
5-10 hours seems like a really low estimate for all the retrofitting though.

I'm getting irritated by the latest "news" about the other 4 manufacturers. It isn't at ALL the same problem.
The other 4 aren't failing the tests the government mandated, and they are passing without cheating.
It's the government's "fault" that their tests don't accurately portray real world conditions. If you want to test reality, then make a test that tests reality ffs. They passed the tests prescribed. It frankly doesn't matter how bad those tests were, because even if the manufacturers KNEW they were bad tests, they STILL have to pass them to sell the cars. Period. This "4 more" is entirely a governmental test designer problem, NOT a manufacturer problem.
But of course plenty of the media and consumers that like getting led around by the nose won't ever realize the difference, and these other 4 are going to get their names unjustly bashed because of it.

Yep, have been slowly watching this crap article float everywhere (internet) as "fact" like most other news stories, most of these publishers have zero understanding of what the original VW issue actually is, this latest story is now everywhere...copy and paste churnalism at it's best.

On certain 2010-2011 Mazda3 vehicles, Non-Methane Organic Gas (NMOG) emission may fail to conform to the LEV-II SULEV exhaust emission standards due to inappropriate learning logic of powertrain control module (PCM).
