Well, I thought I was going to be Mr. Smarty Pants and point out higher interest rates and a weaker dollar. But then it says Toyota and Honda increased their sales, so that pretty much trashes that theory. I guess people are just buying fuel misers.

My recommendation to american carmakers: Get together with the unions and see if you can negotiate an across-the-board, 20% reduction in sucking.
