i finally did it. I traded in my 2004 silver rx8 for an 06 VW GTI. fully loaded except nav system. it comes with 6 disk cd, heated leather, XM radio, sunroof, 6 speed manual trans. the whole 9. i really love it, even though it is so much different then the 8. i will miss the 8 greatly
wish me luck, and i will still come around and visit you guys.

oh and if anyone knows a good GTI forum please let me know b/c i cant find any

Tirminyl 04-02-2006 10:00 AM

Please tell me you do not have those god ugly plaid seats?

Haze 04-02-2006 10:07 AM

You had "no choice in the matter" and "can't discuss it"? I will assume that this was a part of witness relocation. I hope that you enjoy the Vdub, and I hope that they work better than they used to. I loved my '88 GLI, but it was a mechanical nightmare. Fortunately, that was so many years ago there isn't one common part with the current model. Enjoy!

dos 04-02-2006 11:51 AM

Good luck with the 06 GTI. I have a 02 GTI and my RX-8. The APR, REVO, and GIAC chips for the new GTI's are putting out around 252 hp at the crank, pretty nice for about $500 bucks. My 02 is chipped, turbo back exhaust, and suspension, and I love the thing(70,000 miles with only a few dealer warrantied problems). Try www.vwvortex.com

Raptor2k 04-02-2006 12:23 PM

Did you have to change your identity or something?

hondasr4kids 04-02-2006 12:41 PM

Good thing you didn't get the DSG tranny. It is okay for upshifting but I didn't like how it down shifts.

foolio_jones 04-02-2006 08:16 PM

Did the opposite trade - traded in my '03 VW GTI 20th Anniversary for my '05 RX8 about three weeks back. The MKV GTIs are nice, but they nevere really grabbed me. I'm happy to have a full-on RWD sports car, but I'm certain you'll have a turbo-fed blast in the GTI as well.

As for an good VW forum, try http://www.vwvortex.com. Some areas are better than others (the VW MKIV room is notoriously bad), but there are places on there that absolutely rock. For example, The Car Lounge is THE example in my life for a genral-purpose car discussion site.

Not much mention of the RX-8 on there, but that's what this place is for. :yumyum:

Thank you!

I like the GTI. We just picked up a 2001 VW GTI GLI VR6 5 speed for my step son on Saturday. Picked it up with 55k miles, very good condition for $12,500.

He loves it. Not bad for a 1st car. Maybe a bit much (esp w/ the VR6) but .............

Hopefully its our last purchase for a year or two. Last year we bought an 05 BMW X5 (for the wife to drive), an 05 Rx-8 for me (for fun). A Saturn ion quad coupe for a commuter - HATED it. Just traded 2 weeks ago for an '02 Audi A4 Quattro for a commuter. And finally my step sons GTI.

Over the past 3 years we've bought like 15 cars or so. I try not to keep count. Shhh.........I think I have a problem ;-)

youpey 04-03-2006 12:05 PM

so far i have seen 2 rx8's when driving, and it is habit to wave at other 8 drivers, but now i try to refrain myself so they dont think i am nuts. i also find the gti forums arent as lively as this one. very few postings. i love the gti though and i am glad i didnt get the bmw 325ci because that wouldnt have been as much fun i think

BlackDiamond80 04-03-2006 12:09 PM

good luck with your new car

Goodlord man!

Over the past 24 yrs i've bought 1 car, lol

ferragame 04-03-2006 01:01 PM

Yeah the people I know make comments about my "issue" with the car buying thing. But I'm always the 1st person they call when they need to shop for a car.

I just get bored quickly. Hell I even got bored with my 93 TT Rx-7. I kept modifying it (PFS computer, Greddy exhaust, Koni shocks, etc, etc) hoping I continue to like it.

If it wasn't for the fact I only drive the Rx-8 about an hour (or less) a week, I might even, GOD forbid, get bored with that too.

Oh and good luck with the GTI. The car is a lot of fun. I think I might have to ask to "borrow" it from my step son once in a while. :)

ucfracerx8 04-04-2006 01:57 PM

Now you need to go on eBay and see if there are any more "Fast" available to be your co-pilot. If you thought 3300 was a little much for leather, try paying 600 or more for a little plastic ball with changable tails. :Eyecrazy:

Ummmm, I believe VWvortex is one of if not the most posted on car forum on the entire net. It can also be a cesspool but plenty of "postings".

For starters it's overpriced IMO. To upgrade from the ugly plaid seats you HAVE to buy a stereo package (includes either Sirius or XM radio) with your 1k leather making that package $3300. Shoots the price up from base 22k to 25k (I built off their site). Screw getting any other options. Though the dsg seems to be a good performer.

Anyways, congrats on your new purchase.

youpey 04-05-2006 08:38 AM

i have read online that people who buy the GTI will get a free fast doll in the mail in 3 to 6 weeks. i just got my car, so i dont know if my fast will come.

although it doesnt look as sporty as the rx8, it is quite quick. i have found myself going really fast without realizing it.

plus the 320 miles per tank is much better then the 220 i was getting with the 8, and the gti has a smaller tank. Plus my oil changes are every 10,000 miles, and i dont have to add oil to the car every 1000 miles. it is all and all a better car for me. i know it doesnt look super sporty, and it is in a completely different class of cars, but i really like it a lot.

before buying it, when i showed it to my girlfriend, she was like, i didnt expect this at all. it is not what i expected you to be looking at, but then when she saw how quick it was she understood.

oh and for the person that says it is overpriced, i have read online it costs vw a boatload of money to make, hense the price. i Have even read that this body design, the MK5, is only going to be around until 2008 because they cant make any money off of it. that makes me feel even better that i am getting a car, that is extremely expensive to make, shows me vw didnt cut corners to make it more profitable...

oh and ike, thanks for the vwvortex site, i hadnt seen that one, i was using a different one

djseto 04-05-2006 08:48 AM

Good luck. Everyone I know with a VW has had nothing but problems. A good friend bought a brand new GTI in 2003 and tossed it when he came close to losing his warranty for a used RSX Type S. He had it in for more recalls/warranty work than we have on the 8. Faulty wheel bearings, bad windows clips (his windows literally just fell down), bad sunroof seal (flooded his car) just to name a few. According to what he read on VW forums, a lot of it was due to moving assembly to Mexico or one of those cheap labor countries. Don't mean to freak you out, but I hope you have better luck than he did. That being said, I almost bought an R32 instead of my 8....that son of bitch was fun. That particular friends VW exerience is what helped me decide on the 8.

youpey 04-05-2006 09:27 AM

i have heard the complete opposite. in fact i know a guy who literally has 920,000+ miles with his 1985 gti without a single problem. several dealerships have offered him a new gti for his, and he is currently talking with people at vw to get the car shipped to germany so when he hits 1 million miles, he will be driving it into the vw factory. my car was built in germany, so i am not worried about the cheap labor thing you suggested.

modforce 04-05-2006 09:42 AM

I to am looking at the 06 GTI and like it alot. I would to the DSG tranny. I like the 8 as well but still a little torn. I am with you on alot of cars. Me and my wife have had around 15 cars in 10 years with one being a 01 VR6 Jetta!! Fun cars!

I for one am not puting down your purchase at all. It's a cool car but price is a bit high for what you get IMO.

Also, your car is turbo...it would be best to not even think about changing your oil every 10k.

edit- You forgot to post pics :nono:

JRichter 04-05-2006 10:49 AM

Yes the GTI - the original hot-hatch.

I always wanted one. From the articles and tests I've read on the new one it is leaps and bounds over the previous generation going back to good handling and fun to drive like the original.

Good advertising ideas from VW. Anyone seen the commpercials of the Civic getting smashed and the Eclipse getting tossed? :D:

Please post pics.

i personally love the eclipse trebuchet commercial. and i'm going to laugh my ass off when some one tries to use their fast to get out of a ticket. (you know someone will try it).

smrx8 04-05-2006 11:50 AM

Good luck man with the car looks really nice whats the hp on this ???

youpey 04-05-2006 01:12 PM

it has 200 hp and i think 207 or 220 torque. it is really quick. i think if i get the fast doll from vw for buying the gti, i will totally use it to try to get out of a ticket...if anything it will be funny

djseto 04-05-2006 01:26 PM

For the record, I wasn't putting down your purchase. I was just sharing one of several experiences people I know had with VW cars and specifically the GTI. I am sure there are millions of satisfied drivers. There are unhappy 8 owners out there too. The new GTI website is pretty slick

Missile 04-05-2006 03:34 PM

youpey, congrats on the new ride.

I too recently sold my '04 RX8 GT and replaced it with an '06 A4 Quattro, which is very similar to your GTI. I hope you got the turbo and not the VR6. Much better value given the $600 chip upgrade gives you more power than the VR6 and much better MPG.

I was getting 15 MPG in city driving with my 8. I'm getting 22-25 with the Audi. I luved the 8, but MPG difference more than offsets the price difference in the cars. With the price difference eliminated, the Audi is a no brainer for me. The 8 was nice, but the Audi is in a different class.

If the GTI had torson (Qauttro rather than 4 Motion) AWD available, I would have considered it as well. But I needed to get Quattro after having RWD with the 8. FWD just wasn't gonna cut it for me.

Good luck with it dude! I hope you got the white with black grill. The combo looks sick!

youpey 04-06-2006 10:09 AM

i found this information on car and driver's site. this car is a lot faster then i thought and performance is very similar to the 8

Zero to 60 mph: 6.0 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 16.6 sec
Zero to 120 mph: 28.3 sec
Street start, 5-60 mph: 6.8 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 14.7 sec @ 95 mph
Top speed (drag limited): 141 mph

As was noted in another thread, the Golf production was moved back to Germany because of those quality/reliability issues. So the thought is that you should have less problems with the MkV GTI.

youpey 04-07-2006 08:06 AM

yeah, i looked at my window sticker and it was built in germany

18bsTiRX8 04-07-2006 08:26 AM

Congrats on your purchase!

I just did the opposite...sold my Jetta (MKIV) for my 8. I heard that they fixed some of the reliability issues with the MKV so hopefully you will have better luck than I did. Funny thing is, even with my oil consumption probs, the window regulator prob, etc etc, I still loved that car.........VW has a way for making drivers happy even if the car does get a recall or two! You should be happy with your purchase.

Now as for reliability, I was hoping the 8 was a move in the positive direction but with this thread comparing recall histories with the VW, are you guys suggesting that I should be in for another round of probs with my 8?????????

BTW VWVortex.com is the number one VW forum....as far as more relaxed forums with less technical, but much more VW community, I suggest OhioVW.com (one of the largest state-centered VW forums) and clubdub.org (not much car talk, but strong vw community).

18bsTiRX8 04-07-2006 08:30 AM

Oh and about the build location, as far I as I knew with the MKIV, the only Mexico built ones were the 2.0's...that was the stem of the oil consumption probs because they were installing the piston rings in the wrong order....the 1.8T and VR6 (which still had some probs) were built in Germany.

TODreamer 04-16-2006 09:52 PM

congrats!

I love the 06 GTI.... only problem is the reliability which gives me the willies. any of you who have owned VWs or Audis know what I'm talking about...electrical probelms galore and the smallest thing costs a bleeding fortune to fix

Howdy1606 04-16-2006 10:38 PM

So when are you planing on makeing it into man hood? GTI are you a girl or did you get your balls cut off as a child.

zenmoused 04-16-2006 10:56 PM

Ouch. That's a bit unfair. The GTI looks pretty badass. I think we should keep that kind of criticism reserved for Tiburon owners ;-)

Plus my oil changes are every 10,000 miles,
DO NOT FOLLOW THOSE OIL CHANGE INTERVALS!!!!

Audi and VW were recently sued in a class action lawsuit due to multiple engine failures because they spec'd 10k interval's, and idiots were putting in dino or semi-syn oils.

The general recommendation is to run 50% of the interval spec'd by audi/vw...which is every 5k, and run full synthetic fluid. The owners that follow those spec's don't have sludging issues.

Info on the warranty extension due to sludging issues.
http://www.autospies.com/article/ind...articleId=3281

Here is the letter to VW owners. How'd you like to get this in the mail? Oops sorry, that 10k interval...ya we lied. Here's a longer warranty.
http://www.autospies.com/images/uplo...WOilSludge.pdf

Turbo + dino oil + extended drain interval = out of warranty engine replacement.

not much of a car enthusiast are you

Does anybody else find it ironic that words like that would come out of the mouth of an RX8 owner? lol ... umm Howdy, not that I agree with such foolish thoughts but the RX8 was never considered much of a "manly" amongst tools much like yourself either.

thats almost like the kettle calling the pot black in your daft world
