You had "no choice in the matter" and "can't discuss it"? I will assume that this was a part of witness relocation. I hope that you enjoy the Vdub, and I hope that they work better than they used to. I loved my '88 GLI, but it was a mechanical nightmare. Fortunately, that was so many years ago there isn't one common part with the current model. Enjoy!

Good luck with the 06 GTI. I have a 02 GTI and my RX-8. The APR, REVO, and GIAC chips for the new GTI's are putting out around 252 hp at the crank, pretty nice for about $500 bucks. My 02 is chipped, turbo back exhaust, and suspension, and I love the thing(70,000 miles with only a few dealer warrantied problems). Try www.vwvortex.com

Good thing you didn't get the DSG tranny. It is okay for upshifting but I didn't like how it down shifts.

Did the opposite trade - traded in my '03 VW GTI 20th Anniversary for my '05 RX8 about three weeks back. The MKV GTIs are nice, but they nevere really grabbed me. I'm happy to have a full-on RWD sports car, but I'm certain you'll have a turbo-fed blast in the GTI as well.

As for an good VW forum, try http://www.vwvortex.com. Some areas are better than others (the VW MKIV room is notoriously bad), but there are places on there that absolutely rock. For example, The Car Lounge is THE example in my life for a genral-purpose car discussion site.

Not much mention of the RX-8 on there, but that's what this place is for.

I like the GTI. We just picked up a 2001 VW GTI GLI VR6 5 speed for my step son on Saturday. Picked it up with 55k miles, very good condition for $12,500.

He loves it. Not bad for a 1st car. Maybe a bit much (esp w/ the VR6) but .............

Hopefully its our last purchase for a year or two. Last year we bought an 05 BMW X5 (for the wife to drive), an 05 Rx-8 for me (for fun). A Saturn ion quad coupe for a commuter - HATED it. Just traded 2 weeks ago for an '02 Audi A4 Quattro for a commuter. And finally my step sons GTI.

Over the past 3 years we've bought like 15 cars or so. I try not to keep count. Shhh.........I think I have a problem ;-)

Yeah the people I know make comments about my "issue" with the car buying thing. But I'm always the 1st person they call when they need to shop for a car.

I just get bored quickly. Hell I even got bored with my 93 TT Rx-7. I kept modifying it (PFS computer, Greddy exhaust, Koni shocks, etc, etc) hoping I continue to like it.

If it wasn't for the fact I only drive the Rx-8 about an hour (or less) a week, I might even, GOD forbid, get bored with that too.

Oh and good luck with the GTI. The car is a lot of fun. I think I might have to ask to "borrow" it from my step son once in a while.

Now you need to go on eBay and see if there are any more "Fast" available to be your co-pilot. If you thought 3300 was a little much for leather, try paying 600 or more for a little plastic ball with changable tails.

Ummmm, I believe VWvortex is one of if not the most posted on car forum on the entire net. It can also be a cesspool but plenty of "postings".

For starters it's overpriced IMO. To upgrade from the ugly plaid seats you HAVE to buy a stereo package (includes either Sirius or XM radio) with your 1k leather making that package $3300. Shoots the price up from base 22k to 25k (I built off their site). Screw getting any other options. Though the dsg seems to be a good performer.

Anyways, congrats on your new purchase.

i have read online that people who buy the GTI will get a free fast doll in the mail in 3 to 6 weeks. i just got my car, so i dont know if my fast will come.

although it doesnt look as sporty as the rx8, it is quite quick. i have found myself going really fast without realizing it.

plus the 320 miles per tank is much better then the 220 i was getting with the 8, and the gti has a smaller tank. Plus my oil changes are every 10,000 miles, and i dont have to add oil to the car every 1000 miles. it is all and all a better car for me. i know it doesnt look super sporty, and it is in a completely different class of cars, but i really like it a lot.

before buying it, when i showed it to my girlfriend, she was like, i didnt expect this at all. it is not what i expected you to be looking at, but then when she saw how quick it was she understood.

oh and for the person that says it is overpriced, i have read online it costs vw a boatload of money to make, hense the price. i Have even read that this body design, the MK5, is only going to be around until 2008 because they cant make any money off of it. that makes me feel even better that i am getting a car, that is extremely expensive to make, shows me vw didnt cut corners to make it more profitable...

oh and ike, thanks for the vwvortex site, i hadnt seen that one, i was using a different one

i have heard the complete opposite. in fact i know a guy who literally has 920,000+ miles with his 1985 gti without a single problem. several dealerships have offered him a new gti for his, and he is currently talking with people at vw to get the car shipped to germany so when he hits 1 million miles, he will be driving it into the vw factory. my car was built in germany, so i am not worried about the cheap labor thing you suggested.

I for one am not puting down your purchase at all. It's a cool car but price is a bit high for what you get IMO.

Also, your car is turbo...it would be best to not even think about changing your oil every 10k.

edit- You forgot to post pics

Yes the GTI - the original hot-hatch.

I always wanted one. From the articles and tests I've read on the new one it is leaps and bounds over the previous generation going back to good handling and fun to drive like the original.

Good advertising ideas from VW. Anyone seen the commpercials of the Civic getting smashed and the Eclipse getting tossed?

Please post pics.
