Toyota AE86 RWD ? lets hope so

Autoblog.com reported last monday (July 30th) that Toyota is in the process of forming a special committee dedicated to creating interesting cars, mainly because Toyota has no sports cars left in their current line-up. Lexus is of course working on some good stuff, i.e. the IS-F and LF-A, but since the MR2 and Supra, Toyota has only been supplying the non-performance section of the market.
So the time has come for the resurrection of the AE86, a Corrola coupe from the 80's. Japanese car magazine Best Car has pried loose some initial specs of the AE86:
under 4m long,
approximately 1,7 m wide,
measuring 1,35m from the ground up,
target weight lies under 1000kg,
will most likely be powered by a 1,5 liter 2NZ-FE engine.
Toyota's new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (or Subaru to most people) will be supplying the RWD drivetrain.
Like the Scion xD, which is branded as the Toyota ist in Japan, there is a good possiblity that the AE86 might make it to the USA as a new Scion tC, or as an entirely new Scion budget performance car. Toyota is aiming for a 1.5mil Yen (or $12,300 / under 10,000Euro) price tag.

I think this is an awesome move by Toyota. How many Econo Sport Coupes do you know of that are RWD???
They aren't gonna do it... Toyota just make family oriented means of transportion. Just like Honda sells a lot of watered down versions of their cars here too. The accord in Europe is the TSX here. We get a Japanese Crown Victoria.
If it does come here, it will not wear a T but a Scion badge.

i don't like the scion idea, being the new tC.
I also don't see a good future for this car, namely the buyers will rice it out....
i HATE tc's.
although, i wouldn't mind swapping a renesis into that body. ****, under 1000kg? that's real good.

Wow
... i thought alot of you guys would be happy that a light weight japanese rwd coupe could be coming to our shores....guess not.
I for one would love to see Toyota bring this coupe out, wether its badged a Toyota or a Scion, it would give the consumer a choice among all these FWD coupes that are HO-HUM at this moment.

Not saying it’s a bad thing just something I’d have no interest in. If I want a small, light, RWD coupe I’d buy a Mazda MX-5 PFRHT. Then of course we will have a Solstice and Sky coupe out shortly. As well as a 230hp BMW 128i for probably 27-28k.
What isn’t on the market is a mid-engine car below 40k. The closest you have to pick from is an Elise or Boxster. The old MR2 was a good car it just needed more power and better suspension but then it wasn’t made to be a sports car. ME+RWD > than all others. So Toyota, make me an Audi R8 at 2700lbs with 250hp for under 30k. There is an idea for you new committee to make interesting cars. You have the money; the economy of scale and the only thing you lack in becoming a full line automaker are some performance related cars. Hop to it.
I’d have hope for the R4 but still expecting it to cost too much, even a base, no option TT cost 33k.
