Toyota AE86 RWD ? lets hope so

Doesnt look to bad, sorta like a celica in the back.

taken from http://www.worldcarfans.com/8070802.002/toyota-ae86-–-rwd-corolla-coupe" Toyota AE86 – RWD Corolla Coupe?
Autoblog.com reported last monday (July 30th) that Toyota is in the process of forming a special committee dedicated to creating interesting cars, mainly because Toyota has no sports cars left in their current line-up. Lexus is of course working on some good stuff, i.e. the IS-F and LF-A, but since the MR2 and Supra, Toyota has only been supplying the non-performance section of the market.
So the time has come for the resurrection of the AE86, a Corrola coupe from the 80's. Japanese car magazine Best Car has pried loose some initial specs of the AE86:

under 4m long,
approximately 1,7 m wide,
measuring 1,35m from the ground up,
target weight lies under 1000kg,
will most likely be powered by a 1,5 liter 2NZ-FE engine.
Toyota's new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (or Subaru to most people) will be supplying the RWD drivetrain.

Like the Scion xD, which is branded as the Toyota ist in Japan, there is a good possiblity that the AE86 might make it to the USA as a new Scion tC, or as an entirely new Scion budget performance car. Toyota is aiming for a 1.5mil Yen (or $12,300 / under 10,000Euro) price tag.

Toyota needs to bring back the Supra and the MR2, not so much a RWD corolla. A lightweight, affordable, reliable, mid-engined turbo 4 wold be sweet.

ya then they lose out on the affordable 2 door 2+2 coupe market. (Think of how many RSX's, Civic Coupes, Cobalts, Eclipses etc are out there.)
I think this is an awesome move by Toyota. How many Econo Sport Coupes do you know of that are RWD???

There definately needs to be more RWD either 6's or turboed 4's in the market around the $25,000 price.

They aren't gonna do it... Toyota just make family oriented means of transportion. Just like Honda sells a lot of watered down versions of their cars here too. The accord in Europe is the TSX here. We get a Japanese Crown Victoria.

If it does come here, it will not wear a T but a Scion badge.

i don't like the scion idea, being the new tC.

I also don't see a good future for this car, namely the buyers will rice it out....

i HATE tc's.

although, i wouldn't mind swapping a renesis into that body. ****, under 1000kg? that's real good.

having just been to europe a few months ago, i can say for a fact that they have standard humdrum accords.

Someone posted a link to some information about this Nissan 370Z, and it also mentioned something about the possibility of the 240 sx returning. But rumors, who knows.

Wow ... i thought alot of you guys would be happy that a light weight japanese rwd coupe could be coming to our shores....guess not.

I for one would love to see Toyota bring this coupe out, wether its badged a Toyota or a Scion, it would give the consumer a choice among all these FWD coupes that are HO-HUM at this moment.

Not with the Tc selling like hot cakes. The Tc is basically the new Celica right?

RWD does not constitute a civic comparison.

Not saying it’s a bad thing just something I’d have no interest in. If I want a small, light, RWD coupe I’d buy a Mazda MX-5 PFRHT. Then of course we will have a Solstice and Sky coupe out shortly. As well as a 230hp BMW 128i for probably 27-28k.

What isn’t on the market is a mid-engine car below 40k. The closest you have to pick from is an Elise or Boxster. The old MR2 was a good car it just needed more power and better suspension but then it wasn’t made to be a sports car. ME+RWD > than all others. So Toyota, make me an Audi R8 at 2700lbs with 250hp for under 30k. There is an idea for you new committee to make interesting cars. You have the money; the economy of scale and the only thing you lack in becoming a full line automaker are some performance related cars. Hop to it.

I’d have hope for the R4 but still expecting it to cost too much, even a base, no option TT cost 33k.
