Of course it's personal preference.

Why do people feel this mindless need to put down other fine cars? Does the fact that the STi is a very, very capable car threaten your view of your car? Sheesh....

Exactly what I was thinking. I mean this thread did originate as things I liked and disliked about the STi and what my coworkers thoughts were about the two different cars.

Suddenly it became a RX-8 vs STi war. :-/ Seriously I didn't intend it to be like that; there's plenty of threads like that already. Personally, I have no problem saying the STi is a great car. The RX-8 justs fits me better and that fact doesn't take away from how great the STi is.

Well said any prettymuch what I've said all along. For me the STi, Evo, and WRX are the better cars, for you the RX-8 is the better car, that fact doesn't take anything away from the fact that they're all great cars.

As Ike mentioned these are accessories not options, there is a difference. Apophis was talking big ticket items that cost a few grand, leather, navi, etc. Not aluminum shift ***** etc. I can accessorize the 8 well into the $50K range in Canada, but with all the options it’s about 44k. Looks like fully accessorized, the cars would be damn near the same price. Though, I can't check because the Canadian Subaru site doesn't show these accessories during the build.

I concede the boost gauge though, I always thought that was an oversight.
You fail to realize that some of those "accessories" you think will put the car over $50K already COME STANDARD with a GT in Canada Like the 18" aluminum wheels, for example

I got everything except Nav (fvck, I can buy 1000 maps for the price of that) for $41K including taxes.

The Subaru STARTS at $47. That's $10K more than a base RX-8. BIG DIFFERENCE, in my book.

EDIT: what I mean, blueeyes, is that although you can select those accessories on the website, you'd basically be double-paying for things you already have since you selected the GT model.

OMG, Ike - you like Subies better? It's hard to tell from your zillion posts telling us how much better the subies/evos are than the 8. I think those are the types of posts that put so many 8 owners on the defensive all the time. Subies are faster, handle well, have AWD, leap tall buildings, bulletproof.....all great stuff.

I agree with the original post. A good, solid analysis objectively pointing out the good and the bad with each car. We could all benefit from being a bit less defensive about our vehicles. The 8 appeals to a very wide age demographic, and that puts some of the boy racer crowd in with some of the more seasoned drivers. You go to the SRT forum and it's "kill, kill, kill", with the WRX/GTO forums much less so. I like to think that members of this forum can appreciate the car for what it is, which is a unique solution to getting from point A to B. I know I do.

Now that was utter ***** envy bias nonsense. Owning both, I agree on the looks and the riding better. However that is a subjective opinion as I have met several that do not like the looks of the rx8. For people who love performance, the harsher ride and louder cabain means absolutely nothing to them, just as power should mean absolutely nothing to the rx8 owner. Handling, man I can't figure out which one handles better. In the real world daily driving the RX8's steering is easier to live with. I do feel though on a track, the STI will equal or likely be better then RX8. Spoke was right. A simple thread about an STI test drive threw several of you rx8 owner's panties in a bunch. Get over it. This is one of those stupid meaningless responses that only validates the insecurity of several rx8 fans and owners. Such a shame. Time to be objective here folks and not feel insecure on praise of another car. Some things will never change.

Oh, come on. Everybody's scoring points with the Openmindedness Police by saying a lot of the 8 drivers in this thread are getting too defensive, and now you're going to try to outdo them all by making like there's anyone out there that doesn't think the STi looks retarded? Where's your shame, man?

Personally, I'm past the part of my life where I need an extremely fast car and want to race everything out there that revs it's engine at me. I've already gotten a few tickets and wrecked one car, so now I'm at the point where honestly I'll take style over speed. True that everyone has their own opinion, but I think the RX8 is one of the sickest looking cars out there right now. I love it's look, it may not be faster than an STI or S2000 or 350Z, but I think it looks a whole lot better. This is all really a simple mathematical equation:

Amount of time I'll be driving my car to it's maximum effort: Maybe.. 2-3%?

Amount of time the car will look cool as hell: 100%.

Therefore, I choose to go with the RX8 over the STI.

I don't like the looks of the STi, particularly, but that doesn't make it "retarded." As a simple matter of fact, looks are subjective; more people like the looks of the RX-8 than the STi, but that doesn't make the STi "retarded."

Also, of course, most of us were zinging those who mindlessly bashed the STi for its performance, not those who don't like its appearance; I have no problem with someone making the subjective statement "I don't like its looks," but I think it's pretty mindless to say "it looks retarded." YMMV.

I am not particularly fond of its appearance, but it would still be high on my list if I wanted a monster coupe for that kind of price. You've got to drive one of those to believe it.

I don't know. I didn't select the 18 inch wheels and still managed a >50K price. They're a different finish anyhow, i.e a different wheel than standard . I don't think you get the appearance package navi, moonroof, rotary accents etc standard with the GT anyways, if you do, it makes no mention of it on the build page.

What you paid and what the sticker price is are two different things.

Well, you do get the moonroof with GT package, but the others you mentioned are separate. The price comparison is a never ending argument. The STI is what it is, and the price is in the 30k range, and you have no choice. The RX8 allows you to pay less to get less amenities. For me, I paid $3k more for my RX8 which has every option imaginable (paid $29k for 04 STI [MSRP of 32] and 32k for RX8) {MSRP of 36k]. Of course the STI is made in much less of production, so you won't see 5k cash back, and leftover 04s. The price of the STI has also gone up in 05, but you can still get one for about 30-31k where I live. Personally, I don't prefer an RX8 without at least GT package. It's a lesser car to me then STI, and the GT package for me personally
makes it a better car IMO, although I absolutely love my STI. In my case, for what I needed to enjoy the RX8, and the time I purchased it, it took 3k more to get it. So in reality, both arguments are correct, and it's basically a subjective subject.

My poor thread. I think people missed this line in my original post

No, this isn't a "which is better" post nor a "which should i buy" nor a racing post.

I mean the only things I said the STi was better than the 8 at was (note that these are the only ones I mentioned, not the only things the STi was good at)
1) Power - if anyone denies this, they're flat out stupid. 237 hp vs 300 hp. 0-60 in under 5 seconds vs 0-60 in about 6?
2) Length of the throws - I don't see how anyone can deny this either. The throws ARE shorter. You can measure it.
3) Ease of driving smoothly - I've been driving stick for like 8 months. I still frequently have a little jerkiness. Sometimes I'm just flat out ON and every shift is insanely smooth. But usually every now and then I'll have a little jerkiness. When I drove the STi for the very first time everything was pretty smooth with very minimal jerkiness. I also notice when I let people drive my car for the first time (ones that have been driving stick for a while), they have the slight jerks too.

I don't see anything in those statements to cause people to get all defensive or mention why they chose the 8 over the STi instead. It wasn't the point of this thread at all. The only reason the RX-8 came in for a little comparison is because a different coworker test drove BOTH that same day and told me his thoughts. And if you had read my original post he had positive things to say about both cars. He liked both of them even though the cars are pretty different.

Nice writeup and nice to see an RX-8 owner appreciate the STi for what it is.
[ranton]lol i just have to point out that how the hell would you confuse the nice leather stitched/aluminum shifter of the rx8 to a plastic one? you have waay to many opinions on this car for someone that doesn't know the most basic things about it.[/rantoff]

Maybe it's plastic, maybe it's aluminum, all I know if it feels like a cheap flimsy piece. You can tell it will look like crap after some time driving and various owners have proven that.

I thought if anyone knows cheap interior appointments, it'd be a Subaru owner, but the shift **** that came on *my* 6MT is undoubtedly aluminum and leather, and it looks just like it did the day I got the car. What do you guys do with your shifters?
