One thing to keep in mind though Kevin is that there's not an actual car with real stats on the table. Just a confirmation that the raw base block for the 16x is currently capable of 300HP. A turbo could easily push that into a 400HP range, and who knows what other advances they may have in the next 3 years before they have to finalize the production specs.

I think that it will all be pure speculation for the next 3 years till there's something tangible that can be sat in and evaluated as a "prototype". I'm sure that Mazda is well aware that they can't expect to sell an RX8 level car at a premium of a 370Z level car regardless of what year it may be released in.

That's why i'm asking what it's going to compete with? If it's going to be priced higher than the 370z, it's going to need to beat it in every category possible. I'm excited to see that the rotary isn't going to be dead, but this car will have to be a world beater to be in the price range mentioned in that article. It's not like the RX-8 left a great taste in consumer's mouths, and mazda will need more than just rotards buying it for it to be worth the effort.

I agree 100%, and I'm confident that they'll deliver, and if they don't, I'll take the money I was going to spend on it, and go buy another FC... LOL

1. Well under 40K.
2. Reliability/ quality
3. Performance that one ups the RX8 in every aspect.
4. Creative cost cutting measures; No radio, CD, NAV...(7 years I've never used any of this stuff) anything that can keep cost down without disrupting the first 3 needs to be pursued agressively.

Do this and it will be a success. Miss any of these points and it will fail. And it matters not how many seats...2,3 ,4....I don't care!

I will buy this car.

Hey, I had to smile at your comment about not using the Sat, Nav, Radio, CD, etc...
I am the same, never used either in the Miata or 8, don't get me wrong I like sound, but not in these cars, how the hell anyone can have sound on when your human senses and car make a fantastic track that I am NEVER bored with.

That and this stuff is not needed. A phone can do all these things. The spare tire/fix a flat crap for the RX8 was also a big waste of R&D. Ditch it. I keep a plug kit and compressor in the trunk. If that can't get it then I'll call a wrecker. There are a lot of ways to press the cost down considerably. Barney style this car. Make it fast, reliable, fun. That's all most RX8 owners want anyway.

a MR layout rotary with 300hp...
Just an Ipod plug as a sound system and 2 neodiumium magnet speakers...

That's the path mazda should take. The se3p was too much GT too little sports car despite its handling, the FD was too much super car and too little super car at the same time (great concept but it didn't do well here).
Halo car that's as pure as it comes to keep the rotary alive as a flagship... If you need room for 4 the dealership might as well introduce you to cars that fit 5 and are comfy and quiet. the Diesel cx5 and mazda 6.

Here is an coincidence...

Mazda (for Europe) has just added a TSB ''Discontinued the Jack and Wheel Brace'', because they are fitted with the 'emergency flat tyre repair kit' (same as RX-8).

TSB applies to Miata, Mazda ,2,3,5.

Emergency flat tire repair kit = glorified can of fix a flat. I still have that waste of space for for the 8 in the garage along with the spare tire.

I hated those run flats. Nothing but trouble. Found out later there was a recall on the tires but the wife forgot to tell me.

Mazda fight againts emission rules why they are going to bring back Rx-7 ? Rx-7's big room for 2 seats.. also 4 seat spec's heaven..

In my opinion Mazda need Roadster Rotary new sports car... Like s2000. If they passes emissions with 16x then they must be produce 4 seats and enough room for great quality sports car like what GTR 35 did..

Maybe it is called to be Rx-9 !

There would be no way they could be on the same platform, ever had a 2+2 Rx-7? Those back seats were totally useless, I slept in my back seat one time... Well, it wasn't really sleeping, I was basically in a alcohol coma and thrown back there with my feet hanging out the window... Friends still crack jokes at me about it..

It would be what we call the same 'architecture' not platform. The NC MX-5 and the FE (SE3P) RX-8 are built off the same architecture and they can do it again.

Id rather drive a prius.... It'll be a cold day in hell before i buy an American made car. Built as cheap as possible with the cheapest materials and lowest standards. No thank you. Even though many Japanese cars are built here in the states they're still built using Japanese standards and with better materials. Simple guideline to go by, can't afford German? Buy Japanese. Can't afford Japanese? Don't buy. But that is just my preference. I like the look of the new mustang especially the tail lights but it's not my cup of tea.

And with Mazda building a new Miata in another pair of years, and using it to build Alfa Romeo's, this is the perfect time to use that same architecture to make both the RX-7 and RX-8.

Think of the savings having 4 limited production performance vehicles built off of the same architecture. Mazda would be foolish to let this opportunity go by, unexplored.

Like I said earlier, I'd buy a new RX-8 in a heartbeat.
