Mazda is very secretive about their upcoming products and have very few leaks. Look to the Tokyo auto show for any true information about a possible new rotary powered vehicle.
There are people on this site that have connections in Mazda too. We just may scoop them.

I leaked the new Mazda 3 here months ago...
All this other stuff is just mag BS to sell mags, you can not gleam anything from something that is 5 years away.
As Al said, we 'may' see something in the Tokyo MS, if there are no concepts shown then forget it...for another 2 years anyway.
I think ALL Rotary and MX-5 concepts have debut @ TMS 1996 since the NB Miata.
We might see something ND MX-5 @ TMS ...But IMO it is too soon, designs would be finalized, but, I can't see them getting out a concept/model in time.....Alfa has keep Mazda busy changing their minds..like Italians do.

40th anniversary Edition
Exactly correct ASH8. remember there were "leaked" design drawings of the first RX8, and the actual car wound up looking nothing like those early concepts. Trust Mazda to make an exciting and timeless final design for what will be, in their own words, their "corporate flagship car" . I have owned all three generations of the RX7 among my seven rotary cars and I look forward to owning that 16X skyactiv rotary powered RX7 in 2017.

...pondering...
I really like those concept sketches - best thing I've seen so far. I agree they probably don't have any foundation to them that will survive the next 4 years, but I personally really like them!

The magazine pointed out the next rx-7 will be the 50th anniversary for the Mazda rotary. So, i guess it'll be big. (Better be)
Here are few things that Yamamoto pointed out during the interview:
-There are rumors out there sayings the next RX will use the same platform as roadster and such, which points out different possibilities, but unless you are a Mazda insider. You don't know what Mazda is aiming for and capable of.
-Although the engine is still called 16X, but it has already evolved from what was shown at previous TMS. By using the laser ignition system, the current 16X is capable of producing 300+ps. Currently, the 16X development team is still working over time. (lol)
-Most likely it's gonna be more expensive than previous rx7, so start saving money.
Cheers,

I still think if they were to make it look like the Furai, it will sell quite well.
Close enough style language relationship to the current designs that the Mazda resemblance would be picked up by even the blind.

Yep, let alone none of these mag sketches and drawings are SKYACTIV...None.
Suspension is SE/FE/NC Platform as is floor pan pic with 'red' floor spine.
All outdated now..

The suggested release date is 2017, so we can use other Mazdas to judge when we will see mules and official pics from Mazda. The new Mazda 3 will be out this year (No concept at a car show that I know of). The mule was spotted maybe 2 months ago and the car should be with us between summer and fall. The new MX-5 should be labeled a 2015 and arrive next year; no mules, no concepts shown yet. I think serious stuff for the new RX-7 may not show until late 2014 or perhaps 2015. I'm also sure it will not look like any of the stuff put out by the dreamers thus far.

If a similar timeline holds for the future RX-7, then we should see something about 4 years before release, and that means 2013. And this year there is a TMS
It won't be a production-ready prototype, but it may be something equivalent to the RX-EVOLV: the general specs and features of the car should be there, even though the final car will probably look quite a bit different.
Also notice that a similar timeline was used for the Toyobaru: a concept was shown in 2009 and the car was on sale in 2012, so a concept comes out 3 years early.
I seriously doubt that a car manufacturer can afford to make a complete "surprise launch" of a car nowadays (except for supercars, and unfortunately the RX-7 won't be one of these).
So my guess is 2013 TMS for a RX-7 concept and for a miata prototype and 2015 TMS for a RX-7 prototype or preproduction car.

Missed that post. This is a perfectly valid reasoning. But you could also look at the RX-8 development timeline: the RX-EVOLV was shown in 1999 at Tokyo Motor Show, then the RX-8 prototype was shown at the 2001 TMS. Finally, the car was on sale in 2003.

Good to hear they are bringing it back but with it being 3-4 years from now, rumored 300hp, 2700-2800lbs and probably $40k+...Not going to move many units. You also know the torque figure will be much less than what you'd see in a piston engine as well.
Very, very niche but still glad they are doing it.

These are magazine rumors. Magazines need headlines to sell more magazines. Believe these as much as you would a report that we will land a man on Mars by 2020.
Today is the 45th anniversary of Mazda rotary engine cars. It would be nice to see a new one for the 50th. Until you see a prototype at the Tokyo Auto Show (or on the outside chance, LA Auto Show), don't believe anything you read.

I like the sketches a lot. Looks small though. I want something about the size of the 8. The 8 is perfect for a 2+2. If it's a 2 seater then it could be a little smaller. The last RX7 was too small for me though. The BRZ...too small, the Honda S2000...too small, MX5...too small. Even the Boxter is too small. I'm 6 ft and I'm too old to be contorting myself in and out of a car. Plus I have a 6 yo. The Z is just the right size for a 2 seater.
