I don't post much on this forum, but I do my share of reading. I really wish Mazda would have blown everyone away with a 3 rotor turbo producing at least 400 HP. That would have been a car worth waiting for! The added cost would be well worth it.

An RX7 size/style car with 300/320bhp naturally aspirated, 25+mpg would be ideal. I'd be happy if they just put a 16x in an FD body and updated it.

I already have a standard 2000 RS FD, these series 8 cars had turbo/suspension improvements over earlier cars and are lovely to drive. It is standard and dynos at 310bhp (fly) which I find is plenty. The issues are low mpg, non-linear response due to the turbos, basic interior and ugly front number plate holder. Fix that with a reliable 16x and its a winner.

I had my '94 miata fitted with a 13B-MSP last year, currently getting this ported by BDC and with an improved exhaust design, it should get to 230rwhp.

If Mazda can supply me with a 16X, I'll just get one put in my RX7. Job done.

So Mazda, my wish list is :

1. Keep the weight down (sub-1300kg)
2. 300bhp naturally aspirated (tuners can do their aftermarket stuff)
3. 2+2 seating (I use my rear seats)
3. 25+mpg (so I don't need another car for long trips)
4. Piston engine lifetime/reliability (150K+)
5. No pokemon front grille or overstyling
6. I don't need sunroof, satnav, electric seats etc.

How hard can it be??? A 16x should be a lot cheaper/lighter than the complex 13B-REW, turbos, intercooler etc.

How in the hell have I missed this for so many months?! It's been my dream since they announced the 16x!

I'm stoked as hell. Now to catch up on the RX-7 rumor mill.

Note: MAZDA's latest "Nagare" Concept Cars 3 of 5; Nagare, Taiki, and Furai, were ROTARY powered!!! IMO too much money is really being spent in RnD for the Rotary for MAZDA to deliver anything less than the BEST!!!!

The 16X was used in the Taiki Concept (2007) and the new rendering out of the Blue Rx7 or Next Gen Rotary is very similar to what we saw with the the RX Evolv and the Rx8 looked like..... I believe this story to be true.

The concept of the RX8 came in '99 (RXEvolv) and the RX8 was Released in 2004 (5 years). Being 2013 and the new rotary rumored to arrive in 2017, 10 years after its Taiki concept with the 16X (2007]
I wouldn't doubt that MAZDA has had enough time to mess with the 16X , its direct injection, and special catalyst to take the Taiki concept to the next level of taking it from a FR car with a 16X to a MR car with a 16x 3 rotor and design it after the Furai. That would be pure win.

If anyone has read about RE-Amemiyas Lotus Europa with the rear mounted 3 rotor making 300hp N/A ( ROTARY BUZZ: RE-AMEMIYA'S 20B LOTUS EUROPA - Speedhunters) then think that same size, 16X 3 rotor Furai, only having much more torque than the 20b version....Torque!!!!!!!

3 rotor Furai racing in LMS/GT or a 3 rotor Taiki/Rx7 expect Championships like the SpeedSource RX8s...which were also 3 rotor. <:-)

Price Range I expect it to be in with todays $$$
16X in Taiki - $45k+
16X based 3 rotor after the Taiki - $65k
16X based 3 rotor Furai - $100k-$120k

All this is possible, this 16X based 3 rotor. Heck we have that dude that engineered the 12 rotor motor, and recently we had PPRE engineer a 6 rotor. I'm pretty sure Mazdas RnD in charge of the next Rotary have things under control.

Damn wouldn't that 16X based 3 rotor Furai definitely be a Super Car to have! Once they give us that 16X, I'm sure someone will make a 3 rotor out of it like some have already done with the RENESIS.

MAZDA's last two concept cars were the Taiki followed by the Furai. Who knows... we might have two rotaries in the line up, a Sports Car and a Super Car!!!

Is that from an article? It sounds dated. The Taiki was using their old design language, so I wouldn't really expect anything to be based on that. The furai was just a concept. It was a 1 off and ran on ethanol. Aside from the standard 16x, those ideas are nice but unrealistic. Comparing those one off 6 and 12 rotor engines to a full production (or even limited production) vehicle is just not reasonable. Someone's just dreaming too much or trying to stir up hype.

I'm just saying that with the Rotary it seems a lot is possible lately, 6, 12 rotor, rotary charging generator for hybrid use.

I don't think the Furai ran on Ethanol... I think the BP sticker was just used for marketing that it was capable of running on Ethanol 100 but I do believe they used normal race gas when they did run the Furai.

-I am dreaming too much, Lolllllll.

no. the Furai did run on ethanol. the engine was built and tuned at Racing Beat from the start for ethanol. Jim Mederer did the tuning together with the guy from Motec

I think the ? is (or should be) how long have YOU got? IOW despite Mazda mumblings occasionally about the rotary returning again, we'll all be long dead and buried before a cash strapped 3rd or 4th tier car manufacturer like Mazda will willingly stick there foot in any 'oddball', money sink of a rotary engine investment ever again.

The 40MPG rotary is an oxymoron, and always will be.

No 40mpg rotary ,but YES to a rotary with 30% better fuel economy. Direct injection and possible laser ignition and new emissions tech will save the rotary. Mazda says they have solved almost all these issues on the 16X engine. I have owned seven Mazda rotary cars since 1973, and many hard times before, people were sure of the final demise of the rotary. It is the heart and soul of Mazda. It will happen in 2017 as written. The key was the financial success of their skyactiv cars. Well Mazda is putting in more factory shifts to keep up with the demand for their skyactive cars, gas and diesel to come. The cars have been a critical and financial success beyond even Mazda's own hopes. Mazda has produced RXs during cash-strapped times before and will be able to make that next RX7. This is a niche car company that has NEVER had huge sales numbers, but is now doing well enough to continue to follow their heart. As many Mazda execs have said, a rotary will always be their flagship car, their identity. It is what put Mazda on the map and has separated and defined it amongst all other car makers. Have a little faith. I have and have never been let down in 40 years .

My rotary cars: RX3; two RX4's both sedan and coupe; all three generations of RX7: 1978 RX7 w/ 12A engine (later race modified with 450+ Hp Racing Beat-prepared ,race-ported turbocharged 13B engine-not street legal) , 1990 RX7 Turbo II (slight mods) , 1993 FD RX7 twin-turbo (slight mods) ; 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 (slight mods) and also a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 GT (slight mods). I have easily driven over a million rotary miles in 40 years. And I look forward to many more thousands of rotary miles in my RX8 and the next generation RX7.

Not sure about that, but as I'd said before - if it was produced, I'd have my CC out buying it in a nanosec. Just make it 2600lbs, whatever rotary of the moment they could stuff in there, and double wishbone susp. Pipe dream I know

Of course not. Should have put my Mazdaspeed 3 GT into a separate sentence.

The suggested release date is 2017, so we can use other Mazdas to judge when we will see mules and official pics from Mazda. The new Mazda 3 will be out this year (No concept at a car show that I know of). The mule was spotted maybe 2 months ago and the car should be with us between summer and fall. The new MX-5 should be labeled a 2015 and arrive next year; no mules, no concepts shown yet. I think serious stuff for the new RX-7 may not show until late 2014 or perhaps 2015. I'm also sure it will not look like any of the stuff put out by the dreamers thus far.

Paul.
