Now comes Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin, proposing that his state eliminate the requirement that drivers obtain licenses before wheeling out onto the public highways and byways.
Franklin--clearly no intellectual relation to the esteemed Founding Father--is sponsoring something called the “Right to Travel Act” to eliminate driver's licensing. Franklin's proposal says driver's licenses infringe on individuals' “constitutional right to travel on the roads and highways” of Georgia, and we'd guess by extension, all of these United States.

His constitutional right to travel on the roads and highways is NOT being infringed on what so ever. He can still walk, ride a bike, skateboard, take a bus, cab, or even travel said roads as a passenger with someone else. ALL of those are examples of a person being able to freely travel the roads and highways of Georgia.
Driving is a privilege, not a right.
His argument holds no water.

 

A privilege is a right that has been taken away and regulated.

 

Throw out traffic signs, lights, and any sense of organized roadways while you're at it.

"Right of way" becomes "I do what I want". *snap*

Who's a good driver? Everyone! There's no need for quality control.

I have the right to plow my 3000 lbs. sled over anything and anyone without any accountability.

EDIT: Read the article; kudos to AutoWeek for not defending this right-wing nutjob. (they'd be pretty stupid to otherwise).

Mr. Franklin's words are not lost upon me - “Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security.” - but to rationalize such a proposal based on this is absurd.

 

If people could competently drive without a licensing process and there was no obvious gain from the process, then I would support that. The problem is... people don't naturally understand how to drive and require a formal process in order to learn how to do so properly. The guy is an idiot and will obviously go no where with this proposed idea.

 

training drives and licensing them are two different concepts though.

With the License mode the states and federal governments are saying they own the roads and that you are paying them a fee to use them. From a certain libertarian point of view that would be wrong. The government doesnt own the roads to the exclusion of the people. The people own the roads and the government is tasked to build and maintain them.

From that point of view it would be better for the governments to switch to a "training and certification" mode from the licensing mode. it may seem to be splitting of hairs by the distinction is rather important to some because it would remove the idea that the government is the owner of the roads.

and lets leave statements like "right wing nut job" out of the conversation please.

I hope word of this doesn't make it's way across the 49th parallel...
We have bad enough drivers as it is. When people hear the word "rights", it offers them a chance of being held less accountable for their actions. License equals accountability and responsibility. And, it's already difficult enough as it is to have people act responsibly on the roads..

Some things that require "licencing" need it...like driving.

Public Safety requires some sort of testing adequacy to operate a motor vehicle. At present the system can barely sustain the requirements. Think 70 year olds driving a "bus" sized motor homes...when all they have ever driven is an econobox car

They should leave the damn fishing alone though .......Although the money to fund the fishing/hunting resources needs to come from somewhere...so that at least makes it a bit of a user pay system

I think they should move to a more comprehensive licensing that allows varying amounts of freedom. For example, the most basic licensing would allow a user to travel within a certain distance from their home, and only on urban/town roads. While a more complete license would allow travel anywhere within the state or further, the country and include access to highways and tollways. Then a license that allows a driver to travel at higher speeds on highways.
