Official 2016 ND Mazda MX-5 Miata audio teaser and reveal date.

September 3rd, 2014

That is most definitely a force induction engine paired with a DCT or Mazda's SkyActiv-Drive AT. Not kidding about "revolution". I wonder how the purists will take this. I suppose Mazda had to do something to up the ante with the indirect competition (BRZ/FRS).

The powertrain that was on display showed a manual trans, so that is most likely an option too.

Got to see that display model in person at the NYIAS. That was a 2.0 SkyActiv-G NA similar to the engine in the CX-5 and Mazda3. Hopefully the turbo'd variant of the ND MX-5 Miata won't be the Fiat/Alfa turbo 4.

A bit of speculation on the video:

The speculation on the audio clip all over the place is hilarious. Namely, there is no evidence that the audio clip is even from a Miata at all. Yeah, the marketing department would be retarded if they did that, but then, it wouldn't be the first time that they made really poor decisions.

Then there are the comments about the "impossibility" of turbocharging the SkyG engine, due to compression ratios, which is nothing more than stuck-in-a-rut-with-blinders-on thinking. Mazda keeps doing things that conventional "wisdom" says is impossible. Sure there are challenges, but hardly ones that are impossible for a team of nutty Mazda engineers to overcome.

And there is the likelyhood that if there is a turbocharged Miata from the factory, it will likely be an option and not the base engine available. Or if they are all turbocharged, it could be a turboed 1.3L, the Fiat engine? Or even a Mazda variant that would still struggle to hit 150hp.

etc...

Just because an unknown audio clip has sounds from an unknown car that might have forced induction implications, doesn't mean it is suddenly a powerful fast sports car.

Now that it's actually on it's way, it's best just to wait and see.

Very good looking roadster. Looking forward to seeing how a PRHT looks.

-Front end turned out better than previous Kodo renderings
-Awesome tail lights blending the modern linear style with traditional
-Don't see any stupid chrome so far

Disappointed the ugly antenna is still there. Side view on the video looks chubbier than stills lead me to believe?

Not sure how realistic 2200 lbs is, usually vehicles gain weight in successive generations citing "federal standards."

Front looks great, can't say the same for the rear but it's growing on me.

Oh, I want one. Wish it would come with a rotary, but I still want one. One of the more sophisticated designs from Mazda in quite some time. If they use this design language on a 2-door rotary coupe (I can't bring myself to say "RX-7") it would be amazing.

I love how it looks. Best one yet.

Except Mazda has cut weight, and a fair amount of it, in every SkyActive car vs it's preceeding non-SkyActive equivalent. Mazda definitely cut weight from the NC, and they are sticking to their 220lb weight drop statement. Puts this car in the 2200lb range.

Not for those of us that already have 4 sets of 4x100 wheels. Same bolt pattern as the 1990-2005.

Here it is, the 2016 Mazda MX-5. Before you ask, we are not releasing specs at this time. BUT we will confirm that it will be 100 kg under the current model. ‪#‎LessIsMore‬
100kg = 220lbs
2480lbs - 220lbs = 2260lbs.

True, but, the car so far has been shown with 16" & 17" wheels. Harder to find in a 4-lug pattern, but certainly not impossible.

3 of my sets are 15", the other is 16", RPF1s.

Keep in mind that it is also clearly the Grant Touring trim level, with leather, heated seats, the center pop up display, etc... Every single other car Mazda sells that has a GT trim has upsized wheels, and I think all of them upsize 2 inches. I would bet that a base no-frills trim level will have 15s. I suspect that the hubs are even the same hubs on my wife's Mazda2, which fits all my 15" wheels without issue. The only question that might make 15s not fit is brake size, but with 220lbs knocked off, I'm betting the brakes are in-line with the sport brakes of the 2001-2005 Miatas (which I have on mine)

I suspect 15" wheels will look out of place on this design, but we won't know until we see it in person.

I'm sure you are correct that the brake size will be optimized for the car to keep it light.

For me personally, who is autocross-afflicted, I'm already wondering if I can get 17x8s, or 8.5s, or even 9s (perhaps overkill for such a light car). 17x7s Enkies seem available enough, but I'd want more wheel than that for competing in STR.

Assuming the car sells well (and I'm sure it will) the aftermarket will respond, I'm sure.

I should take some pics of mine with 15s vs 16s. The 15s have more sidewall of course, but to me, it's hard to actually tell the difference visually. They both seem to just barely clear the calipers.

This is with 17s, so 15s may not fit around the calipers.

A much better reveal in Japan, here: Skip to ~19:40. Not subtitled, but a whole lot of better angles.

7,500rpm redline that is higher than any other SkyG engines right now, and I'm hoping that it isn't just a performance tuned 1.5L under the power limited Japanese regulations. 7,500rpm from the current 2.0L would suggest a peak power number of around 170-180, depending on intake and exhaust tuning shifting the current torque curve rightwards on the graph.

The WWP one in the background has my attentive eye too....

After looking at at the little men getting in/out of the new car I can tell, it's too small for me.
Nice looking though.

2016 Mazda Miata First Drive Report! (Sort of.) ? News ? Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog

From the guy that drove it out onto the stage in the US:
“They knocked it out of the park on ergonomics,” said the six-foot-one Miller. “It has that sports-car feel.”
And it looks like he fits rather well. This is just one of the few still shots from a web search, but in the video you can see that he isn't having height problems.
