one of the firs things i noticed about the car as it rolled out was that "valley" or scallop as Derek Jenkins called it that runs sort of diagonally between the door handle and the rear fender. that's one of the most brilliant and visually appealing( to my eye) sculpts on a normal production car ever.
also i cant see this car from front to back. what i mean is , even when looking the front 3/4 shots my eye is drawn to the back first then follows the lines to the front.
the sculpting of the hood and front fenders is amazing. i'm still trying to understand how they managed that hood with that swoop to the nose under the regulations for ped. safety etc.

I'm really liking the direction they are taking the MX line.
the lines have a bit of F type and Z4 in them but with the usual Mazda flare. (that hood line and fenders are sexy)
can't wait to see it in show rooms
too bad I still won't fit in one.

oh and they brought people on stage from the audience to sit in it. the guy was afraid to open the door
A much better reveal in Japan, here: Skip to ~19:40. Not subtitled, but a whole lot of better angles

Zoom, did you notice the interior, upper edge of the doors? Look around the interior door handles. I love how it brings the body color in like that. I wonder if they have done anything tricky with the markers like that. Like the lens are all clear, and it's actually just letting the base body color come through, with some clever LED placement to still light up how it needs to.
Which brings up the point that I like that ALL lightning in the new one is LED. At least in Japan. I sincerely hope that the US regulations don't block that.

This is, by far, the best looking Miata/MX-5 they have designed. The lines are crisp and sharp but yet flowing. It should prove to be as classic as the FD.
It's amazing that the hood is that low without having a rotary engine under it. We can only imagine and hope, right?

It's rather humorous, and slightly annoying, the various drama over this car on the actual Miata forums.
Mazda-speed.com: Most like it
Miataturbo.net: Virtually all like it, passive disinterest is the worst
Miata.net: 50/50, with those that dislike it hate it with a passion. The ones that like it, just moderately like it
Clubroadster.net: Haven't learned that there is a new generation yet
One of the more ... vocal comments on Miata.net so far:
Beauty is subjective, sure but ...

I am angry. Really angry.
I hold my tongue about most designs because I am not the target market, but this car, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.
The worst part is knowing that every time I see one of these things I will see a great opportunity lost. Gone. Over.
The car has wonderful overall proportions, and that's what makes the designer's crime all the more vile. Sick. Awful.
They destroyed it for no other reason than to stroking their own egos. In the end they'll know they failed. The car isn't great, and it could have been. It'll go down as just a footnote to the NA.
This small, tight, pure little machine should not be infected, festooned or decorated with the trite, weakass nonsense crap of some clueless egotistical designer or design boss.
One of the forum members once asked why all cars can't be beautiful.
Well here's the reason. HUMAN NATURE.
They can't help getting their egos involved. They want to put their fingerprints on it, "sign it", graffiti-ize it. Oh and they did. I can think of a few other phrases and words that describe what they did but are not fit for this forum.
A beautiful design requires restraint, maturity and discipline on the part of the designer. An Aston V8 Vantage, a E46 M3, a Cord 810 all from the heart. All pure.
How quickly stupidity and ego can turn an E-type into a Daimler Dart.
The only reason I am not screaming "moron!" to the people that say they like the car is because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. I think that what they are seeing are the great overall proportions and not the detail warts and tortured surfaces from the design team. I can't live with those. I will not buy one. EVER.

Apparently, he is a designer for Ford (the latest Explorer is his work), and he has several pages of rants like that, but never actually specifies what it is he doesn't like about it.

No, no one could get out of him what he is referring to. Apparently every line on the car was "10mm off from being good". Or something.
The amount of passionate dislike for it by 1990-1997 owners is moderately hilarious. He takes it over the top by having a childish breakdown that he feels is supported by the fact that he does vehicle design for a living. "It's his profession, so he must know what he is talking about."

It is common the last several years to dislike anything that is updated. The Evo community hated the Evo X. Subaru community hated the updated STi. Corvette owners bitched about the C6 and C7. Many in the Mustang community do not like the upcoming Mustang. Rotary community hated the RX8.

Overall, looks very good. I find it difficult to find faults.
But I agree that the headlamps are the weakest styling element of the exterior.
Not fond of the "epicanthic fold" styling and the little "tear duct" appendage.

Some powertrain shots. There appears to be a lot of room on the intake side... Perhaps a roots supercharger would fit nicely in there.
