Even when they banned refuelling Bridgestone tires could almost do a full race without showing significant degradation.

One of the biggest selling point for Pirelli when they signed the contract was the promise of delivering short lasting tires that would require the teams to do more pit stops.

The car actually does better on it's tires at high fuel loads rather than light loads. The only reason the lap times are slower is because of the weight of the fuel.

The tires wear harder as the car gets lighter. The car slides more and the rear tires spin easier because of the weight loss pushing the rear down. If you compare stints especially with Hamilton his tires are far worse at the end of a race than stint 1 or 2.

Tyres wear more when the cars are heavier. We're talking of more than a 120kg weight difference! The fact that they generally start on soft compounds and end the race on hard ones makes things worse.

@Blazen: the rubber looks worse at the end of the race because they run longer stints on hard compounds

I think massa starting on the hard on 4th could have done really well if it wasn't for his 2 punctures

What bse50 said is true. Personally, I don't mind the fact that there is a different strategy to winning now. It highlights the better drivers. A good driver needs to know how to enter a corner and accelerate out in order to maximize tire life. I think Kimi is one of the best at doing this and I really enjoy watching him drive.

There has been rules limitations that have prevented pure flat out racing almost since the time when the first two cars lined up on the street. Racing is about going flat out within the limitations of the rules.

As for strategy, I find Poker better fits dealing with the real world.

That's the problem Al! Going flat out within the rules is ok, rules preventing you from going flat-out are bad! Tyres pertain to the latter example. Drivers can't drive as they would because of them... Aero or power mods still let you go flat out.

I think racing should be about who can be the fastest while overcoming different challenges and adapting to the different circumstances. Only in these situations can you really see the brilliance of the drivers and engineers. It's not just about money and who can find a loophole in the rules to build the fastest car flat out.

Everyone likes different things I guess, but I'm enjoying F1 these days. Maybe it's just because Kimi's back.

This is about balance in my opinion. Right now it is too heavily weighted toward team strategy vs team technology. Worst of all is the lack of emphasis on the driver's abilities. In percentages, I'd say give me 10% less tire influence so we can see drivers like Kimi do their thing. I don't want to see them slow up to conserve tires.

F1 has a pretty amazing rate of development so I'm sure they'll have a much better understanding of the tires by the next couple of races.

Following a discussion with the teams after the Bahrain GP, Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli has decided to make a change in the hard tyre. This means that as of the next event, the Spanish GP held at Circuit de Catalunya, the hard, orange striped tyre will be of a different type.

The Mercedes front row lock out is complete. The race is a different story and I can just about guarantee there will be early scrapping. Lewis will not be satisfied to be outdone by Nico and Vettel is a beast with starts. Raikkonen is generally strong and tactical. Nando is a great and aggressive starter and Massa will be right there as well.
