New Subaru Outback and Legacy
The Outback:

The Legacy:

They look really nice. Subaru now offers a turbo version of every base model. :D The interiors look great, not to mention finally the exterior is starting to look good.
What do you guys think? Sure, they're not rotaries, but they're boxers so they're unique in themselves.

I love the new Legacy, I can't wait to drive one in a couple weeks and see what numbers C&D comes up with! They managed a 13.9 with the Forester XT so it'll be interesting to see what they can do with the Legacy GT.

When I started reading this board I was sure I was getting the 8 this summer. But since then I bought my wife a Forester XT, and I am thinking now that the legacy sedan will be the right mix of performance and practicality for me. I'll be test driving both.

"In Japan: The new Subaru Legacy won the Car of the Year Japan award, beating out the second-place finisher, the Toyota Prius, by a handy 46 votes. Third was the Mazda RX-8. Forty-eight Japanese-based auto journalists voted on the award. " -C&D

But, I just found two things I may not like about the Legacy (can you belive that) One....is the suspension... two they are using a double weighted fly wheel.... Hmmmm...could that hinder the driveing experience??

Plus the US four wheel drive is a 50/50 split with the manual, and that manual is a only a 5 speed. The japanese is 35/65
The engine power tapers out (stock) above 5600, granted it is nice to rev to 6500 but if the engine isn't making power there like the boxing 6 is, why rev it out, only 3000 to 6000 is the work zone
And the US doesn't have the constant pulsation as the japanese 2.0
I hope dealers are willing to drop the price closer to invoice rather than the high MSRP.

Well....we will find out soon. I have one on order it, finished the credit check and the down payment is in their hands. Black on Black 5 speed..... Said it will be in this week..but its not here yet so I expect it next week.
I drove the automatic that they have...and god...was that horrible...the auto/shift was sooo disapointing...
I thought the Japanese model was 50/50 split?? The Legacy's have have always been 50/50.... where did you get that info??
Just so I can read up.

When I get it I will make a full posting.
I have to do some work to it first...
Change the tires...the RE92's will not cut it...
Plus, I will take the 2.5GT badge off...
I think its tacky...

I heard that you could get them with a 6-cyl but It didn't look that way when I looked at subies site. I didn't even know they were on sale yet. What trim level did you end up getting?

subaru has 4 drivetrains,
a crappy clutch pack coupled rear axle (not four wheel drive) very much like the Haldex of Volvo and VW and ford
http://www.subaru-global.com/about/awd/2322.html
the current center differential and 45/55 differential torque split, with hydraulicaly actuated lock-up clutch, four wheel drive (automatic only)
http://www.subaru-global.com/about/parts/06.html
The bevel gear center differential (50/50) with viscous coupling clutch four wheel drive and 5 speed manual (US WRX)
http://www.subaru-global.com/about/awd/2321.html
Planetary gear center differential (35/65) with electromagnetic lockup clutch (ala DCCD driver controlled center differential) four wheel drive (US WRX Sti)

You can get the Outback with a H6. Japanese have the 3.0 R version of the Legacy wich is a H6. We won't get that though...
But, mine will be Black with Black leather 5 speed..no spoiler..2.5 GT.
It comes with in dash 6 disc changer..
Not as gadget laden as my 8..no nav or tire pressure monitoring system or anything.
But, its a diffrent kid of car..
I have a Cusco front strut tower brace from my old 2001 Legacy that I have my fingures crossed that I can put on the new one. It is a JDM strut tower brace for the Japanese B4..so it is curved for the inter cooler.. I know they made it longer than the old model..but I a don't think its wider..so there is a small chance it may fit...
If not I will have to wait for some one to make one..
Oh well..
It makes me wonder why Subaru doen't add little touches like that like Mazda does...even the Protoge 5 has a strut tower brace..
Hmmm...

Very nice car indeed. I'd be very interested in the review. As for the detuned STi engine... that's a very quick fix... find a Sti engine and do a transplant. That way you get an extra gear to use as well.
At one point I was thinking about an rs2.5 then gradually make it a WRX. Subaru has come quite a long way from the mid 90's styling and performance. As for the car of the year award... possibly... I'd have to do some more thinking about the new cars to determine if it's worthy of that award in my opinion.

Only the STI (with DCCD) has the 35/65 split. The US turbo version is actually better than the 2.0L they use on the JDM Legacy. The Semi close deck design of the 2.5L is the same as the JDM 2.0L and also has AVCS however the 2.5L does have a larger displacement.
