All it really achieves is turning the motor 180* to allow room 'on top' to accommodate a turbo....

Apart from that, I don't see any advantage?

Anybody?

Beuler?

Yes, thank you.

Drawings show a spun port injected renesis. I don't get it either.

New Star Mazda engine? They are due for a new chassis some time soon I believe.

the intake track is longer. that allows for more power due to helmholtz tuning. shorter exhaust path. it's not just rotated. that would put the oil pan on top. it's recasting the engine so the ports and the igniton are on opposite sides from where they are now and swapped vertically

Well, it's perfectly cromulant that they knew not to put the oilpan on top, but I'm still missing the 'advantages'.....

Looks like even the catalyst will be above the engine, so that's marginally retarded.

At first look, it seemed that they had changed the rotation direction to widdershins, but that view is from the gearbox end, so it is the same as before.

Still missing any design advantage.

longer intake for better resonance tuning, shorter higher flowing exhaust path for less restriction and faster turbo spool... better fuel injection flow... lower engine packaging, lower cg... Not great improvements but still.

The advanatages might be: (1) reducing turbulence in the engine wrt buildup at the ports, (2) space in case they're adding in an AWD and electric motors that will take side-to-side space, (3) Mazda is getting into lightweight airplane engine market, (4) allows for higher compression chamber shape for improved fuel economy / emissions.

The fact that the patent published shows Mazda's got skin in the rotary's future. I like that.

points yall missed..
1 heat on the the top of the engine, hinting at major thermal changes, maybe the coolant path is different as well.
2 oil is still injected on top? during expantion? i vonder?
3. side exhaust again. yikes.

I would highly doubt that will ever go away. It's an emissions thing. If they're going through the efforts to recast everything, I would make the center plate a little thicker and allow proper cooling and sizing of the center port. I really wish they would make a 2 piece eshaft with center bearing...
