New mazda rotary patents.
New R&T article is a must read for the possible future of a new rotary!!
Mazda Patent Hints at an Updated, Turbocharged Rotary Engine |
All it really achieves is turning the motor 180* to allow room 'on top' to accommodate a turbo....
Apart from that, I don't see any advantage? Anybody? Beuler? |

Apart from that, I don't see any advantage? Anybody? Beuler? Drawings show a spun port injected renesis. I don't get it either. New Star Mazda engine? They are due for a new chassis some time soon I believe. |
the intake track is longer. that allows for more power due to helmholtz tuning. shorter exhaust path. it's not just rotated. that would put the oil pan on top. it's recasting the engine so the ports and the igniton are on opposite sides from where they are now and swapped vertically
|
Well, it's perfectly cromulant that they knew not to put the oilpan on top, but I'm still missing the 'advantages'.....
Looks like even the catalyst will be above the engine, so that's marginally retarded. At first look, it seemed that they had changed the rotation direction to widdershins, but that view is from the gearbox end, so it is the same as before. Still missing any design advantage. |
longer intake for better resonance tuning, shorter higher flowing exhaust path for less restriction and faster turbo spool... better fuel injection flow... lower engine packaging, lower cg... Not great improvements but still.

whoah whoah whoah calm down stealth no need to start throwing words like cromulant around ;)

whats going on here? stealth and zoom both on 8club? cant be true

The advanatages might be: (1) reducing turbulence in the engine wrt buildup at the ports, (2) space in case they're adding in an AWD and electric motors that will take side-to-side space, (3) Mazda is getting into lightweight airplane engine market, (4) allows for higher compression chamber shape for improved fuel economy / emissions.
The fact that the patent published shows Mazda's got skin in the rotary's future. I like that. |

I see this as the most exciting RE news since the 16X was announced. The future is bright friends :)

points yall missed..
1 heat on the the top of the engine, hinting at major thermal changes, maybe the coolant path is different as well. 2 oil is still injected on top? during expantion? i vonder? 3. side exhaust again. yikes. |
