i dont know anyone who can hate the G8 if they give it a test drive. it is a great car.

 

I havent test drove it yet but have been meaning to....along with the 370z

 

Love it or hate it, it's great bang for the buck and pushes other automakers to keep up. A great buyer's market.

This is the way I look at it. Before the 8 I owned a 1995 Camaro Z28, loved that car to death but was forced to sell due to mechanical issues (it has 265K mi). I bought the 8 and it was a different world. Both cars were fun to drive but just in different ways, the Z28 could take off the line like a bat out of hell, it could also blow just about anything on the highway. Contrast to that the 8 was more docile and nimble, it showed it's true prow rouse on curved onramps or very windy roads. The thing is you'll never push either car to the limits on the street so each of their shortcomings will not show their face. Except for the occasional red-light or onramp adventure.

 

If your considering this POS why not just swap a LS1 into an FD or FC?

just why is it a POS? just because you dont like something it is not automatically a POS. I believe that the camaro and mustang have come very far from what they were and they can put an 8 to shame really fast. Although I truly love my 8 I also like these cars.

 

i have an 06 stang now but the new camaro is a great car and i'm seriously considering getting one.

 

My father owns the G8 GT. Exceptional car, period, not just for the money. Handles well, good acceleration, decent on gas. The Camaro weighing nearly as much though might make the G8 GT an even better car to get over the Camaro though due to it's added practicality.

If there was a simple fix to the 370z oil cooler (should be), limited slip diff (I hear the stock one is aweful for track use, coming from an owner who has tracked his) and clutch issues (maybe), I might jump at getting one of those. As good as the new Camaro is for the street, it just doesn't appeal to me unless there was a track pack option and the 370z has the problem of needing too many fixes for track duty.

Looks like I'm keeping my RX-8. It's nice not having car payments at least.

You're right I hate street racing. It's for guys with tiny penises who think it's cool to endanger the lives of civilians and spectators. That's not why I hate muscle cars. Lets face it, Street racers drive Hondas.

What I want, is a fusion powered monster, with fat tires and massive hub mounted electric motors that deliver full torque and 200HP at 0 RPM, per wheel. I want a heads up display with GPS and night vision, radar proximity warnings, and a massive stereo, and I want it with classy retro styling with enormous fins.

The Camaro is none of that. The camaro is an old design based off hundred year old technology, that has absolutely nothing new to offer the market other then "ITS A NEW CAMARO!"

But hey, There will always be luddites who will cling to the sentimental feelings coming from using a legacy technology that was once wondrous science fiction when they were a child.

We need to stop looking into the past for car inspiration. The new Camaro is looking back 50 years to bring a new car to the market. When they designed the original, do you think they looked back to the model T for a reference? Hell no. They looked to the future. American muscle will die because it tried to head into the future while driving in reverse.

 

^ actually i disagree, the reason they bought it back is because there's a market for it. And seeing how well the retro feel did for the stang it would be stupid to not attempt a retro camaro as the history is just as long. Thus it is something new to the market, a v8 rwd 2 door for 30k. At the moment there are the mustang for about 29k and the challenger which is well over 33k.

Great post. Still, I don't dislike the Camaro for what it is. I don't foresee GM having much trouble at all selling their annual production. Most of the demographic will be males 20-40, from the Heartland, and blue collar or in the military. That's just not me, but I can't say it'll be a bad car for them...

 

Well the car you want with all that tech would now probably weigh just way too much and being that it is all new technology only GOD knows how well it will withstand the abuse of a track day.

I think we are far from having electric vehicles for some time still and for now ill takem y gas guzzlers with premium and a side of oil. Thanks!

 

Just something about a rumbly V8 and good looks that I like. I test drive cars pretty much every year on my birthday and I plan on trying out the Camaro, Challenger and 370z this year. Looks like fun.

 

that is something that I CANT stand about electric cars. They make a horrible sound. One of the things I love about racing cars is the sound they make.

What is there to push other automakers to keep up? If you have seen the automotive industry lately like in the past few years, the successful car companies are the ones that make boring appliances. They are the one that are not begging for bailout money. Camaro, G8, Challenger, etc.... they are not gonna be the bread and butter for the car maker. Look what happened to the likes of GTO, Charger, Magnum, Impala SS? They are deader than afros and bell-bottoms.
Business is about making money.

What exactly is retro about the Camaro? I mean the shape resembles the old one (duh, since it would be retarded for GM to come out with a Porsche shaped car and call it the new Camaro) and there's some old styling cues on the inside of the car. The styling on the Mustang is definitly retro. All they did was take a 1960's Mustang and smooth out the lines. The Challenger is VERY retro. I don't think the new Camaro resembles the old one very much. I mean its definitly got that low, wide, blocky look of a muscle car that its supposed to have, but other than that I don't see it as an old Camaro thrown into a wind tunnel to smooth out the edges like the Challenger or Mustang.

It offers what the Mustang lacks in performance with a price tag the Challenger can't compete with. Whether you like it or not is up to you. But it really does look like the Camaro is the future of muscle cars. It clearly outperforms the Mustang and Dodge screwed up big time by pricing the SRT8 at over $40K, since one of the KEY elements of a muscle car is that its affordable to the average-Joe. The SRT8 is pretty much in Corvette price-range, something that everyone knows the average-Joe can't afford.

Nice post above about bringing something new to the table though. It even has the magnetic ride suspension that is shared with the Ferrari 599 Fiorano and the Corvette ZR1. It really is anything but retro designed. Retro-inspired, but I think the shape has a nice sleek modern look to it.

 

Your right they aren't the bread and butter of their respective company but neither is the 370Z, Honda S2000 or G37 coupe. So why keep them, it's called marketing. You see the brands get lots of publicity when it comes to these cars, at auto shows, and or special events. They also garner alot of foot traffic at dealerships which in turn may yield a potential buyers for their other cars.
