It seems to me that the touring package, at around the same price as the other cars, would have still won. The GT package does not seem to be the deciding factor here, so I don't think it's far-fetched to say it's still a competitive car in terms of performance and price.

Agree, So far for all USA specified 2014 GJ Mazda 6's there is no difference mechanically in almost every respect (unlike Europe/Japan/Australia), Engine, Brakes, Suspension, Sway Bars, Shocks are the same regardless of package selected (identical OEM Part Numbers#)...dynamically they are all the same on the road (apart from the 'sports' 17" rims/tyres to 19" on all other packages).

The extra costs is mostly cosmetic, plus interior feature and advanced safety stuff.
The only 'mechanical' difference is whether one selects Auto or Manual Transmissions.

# Mexico spec has different Shocks...and a few other minor bits.

The Extra Mile: 2014 Mazda 6 Sport - Sports - Daily Review
"Most important is the Mazda6's outstanding, low cost entry price of just $20,880"

The competitors are many and strong, including Nissan Sentra and Altima, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Dodge Avenger, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Chrysler 200, VW Passat and Chevy Malibu. Still, Mazda6's attributes outweigh most of the challengers, if not all of them.

I will end this story with a tale that's going to sound like it could easily be a contrivance of Mazda New Zealand's marketing department, but isn't. It's absolutely true. I had left the wagon at Auckland Airport overnight, and while I was away somebody in a previous-generation model - blue, just like mine - had parked next to me.

In fact, we both returned to our cars at the same time. He was naturally very interested in the new model, especially as it was the Mazda6 that had converted him to the world of wagons in the first place: "I had never owned a wagon before this one, never considered one. But I wanted the Six and I just thought the wagon was the best looking one by far." Presumably better looking even than the (now-defunct) hatchback.

This man would be keen to hear about the SkyActiv diesel engine, I reasoned, as that's a new feature for the Six. I enthused about it in a nerdy way; he was mildly, not overly, interested. But he did love the firm-order-only off-white leather trim in my car: "It's like an Audi or BMW". Well said

Hey Matt

Just got back from my local shopping centre, and talking to an owner of an all new Mazda 6 Wagon 2.2 SA-D.....he pulled and parked right alongside my NC Miata.

He said..."what little sports car is that!"...I said a Mazda, same brand as your 6....OK he says..

Anyway this guy is a similar age to myself, and this is the first time he has ever bought a new Mazda (any Japanese car) , let alone a diesel.!..

Once we started on THIS car...well,,,, I have never seen a car owner’s face ‘light up’ so much..

His enthusiasm for the brand, his Mazda, was infectious.

He ‘normally’ (ONLY) owns Mercedes Benz C class (also had a BMW 5 series once for less than a month), as his son works for MB new car franchise as one of a few head technicians.

So as he said, ‘’my son first put my new Mazda 6 Wagon on the hoist for all the Mercedes Benz techs to have a look at’’.

They were all impressed with the fit and finish, the preciseness of where and how everything fits.

He ‘thought’ the Germans were the masters of production line assembling, but, Mazda clearly (in his opinion) shows off a new generation of auto engineering.

What he could not get over was the ‘lightness’ of most of the suspension parts and how it would pass safety evaluations when compared to the much heavier German engineering.

Every MB mechanics (sorry technicians) who were @ work took his Mazda Diesel 6 Wagon for a drive and everyone (bar one German national tech) got out of the car with that broad smile on their dial!!!

His words, That “”impressive”” look, that stuck for words look.

Anyway, these guys just could not believe the sheers ‘fun factor’ in this car...for an Estate...I said this was standard DNA for all Mazda cars for the past 15+ years or more...

‘’Really!!??’’...he said

I tried and tried to get a few ‘negatives’ from him, but it was almost impossible....He is/was disappointed about Mazda’s paint finish and paint depth,,, so am I.

He just could not get over just how good new Mazda’s are..

He could not also get over the fact that nothing was wrong with his car @ first and second (just had it) servicing...everything was positive.

He really enjoyed the professional service guys (Australian Motors) and the fact his car came back vacuumed and crystal clear clean. (good to see my old dealership has kept up the good customer service).

I invited him to join our RX-8 club and part with Mazda 6 SA-D Wagon ownership...he said he will consider it, but does not have the time.

Anyway Matt, I know this does not say much at all, but I was somewhat blown away at what he said directly to me as a new owner of only 4 months, 9800 KMS.

Also, no doubt to me in looking @ this Mazda 6 Wagon next to my MX-5 just how beautiful it was in that new light blue/grey, very impressive looking mota!...

Not a lot of detail here Matt, but I thought I would share you my brief encounter with a new Mazda stranger.

Edit: I should of added this was his wifes car, he still owns a 2010 C class.
