Lol as much as I support the underdog, this ain't gonna happen unless Mini challenges them to a parallel parking competition.

They've got a driver to race in a Porsche against them

We'd like to announce the selected driver for the race on Monday -- Cory Friedman!
Cory holds 13 track records for the Porsche Club of America racing series and has raced on tracks all across America, including Road Atlanta. Recently Cory placed 4th in the GTC class, driving a Porsche 911, at the 2010 12 Hours of Sebring. He's currently racing in ALMS, Grand-Am and PCA.
Can't wait to see what he's got!

and now Hyundai wants in too!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaiB_...layer_embedded

As Hyundai spokesman Dan Bedore says, "Since we launched the Genesis Coupe, we've always said that we'll take on all-comers when it comes to comparison tests. And we've had some experience on the race track at Road Atlanta. We'd be happy to meet Mini on the race track."

The gimmick is in the track layout description. Cars starting in opposite directions but both running the course counter clockwise means one car will be doing it in reverse.

edit: I looked at the map a little closer, and see how they have it labeled for a start in opposite directions.

No one is going in reverse. Unless I am missing something. Just follow the arrows.

I wish Hyndai would have jumped in the mix a bit earlier, they're a little late to the party!

Now it's just getting complicated lol. Good to see that a porsche of some sort might show up. They at least get the satisfaction of something happening. He's not actually being asked by porsche or showing any direct affiliation with porsche though, is he?

Detlev Von Platen, Porsche's North American CEO, put Mini CEO Jim McDowell down softly this afternoon, sending him the following message and reiterating that Porsche has already proven itself in the motorsports arena.

Dear Jim,

Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.

But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. If you need a reminder of our intent, please take a look at this short video.

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.

Good luck with your race at Road Atlanta on June 21; we hope you enjoy the day.

Sincerely,

Detlev Von Platen
President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America

Disappointed by the technical issues and the fact the "live" race isn't/wasn't live at all...

I dont care if this did or did not happen. It was retarded from the start. It was supposed to be on some crappy little autocross course that no one cares about not one of the best road courses in the country -- Road Atlanta. Mini, if you want to take it to Porsche challenge them where they excel in. That's like if a marathon runner came up to a weight lifter and said "i challenge you to a run". What a completely laughable challenge. What was this idiot thinking?

If you watch some of their videos on facebook you'll see how much of a joke this is. The mini driver said something a long the lines of "we dont want to go out on the big course (the REAL Road Atlanta) because this is only a stock car and that's dangerous". What a crock of ****. There are stock Minis and stock Porsches out on the track every single weekend. Then they make this crappy autocross course and say "the mini is faster in real life scenarios..." Oh, you mean like when you're speeding through school zones running over small children, killing wildlife and disrupting the peace? Good job Mini. You really showed your maturity on this one. Porsche builds cars for the track that you can easily live with on the road. A Porsche will smoke a Mini on any proper road course any day. Apples and oranges here. I'm not sure what their point is.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!!! Porshce wins by over 2 seconds on a small autocross course that Mini designed to give their car the advantage. 2 seconds on a track that small may as well be 2 minutes! Maybe they should accept Hyundais challenge. Then again they probably don't want to get their asses kicked by them either!

I like how the Porsche driver was very humble about the ordeal. As a pro driver he wasn't even to sure if he could pull off a win ,he did admit that it would be close.

2 sec's isn't close at all,I say that Porsche humiliated the Mini pretty badly. Something tells me the Hyundai would have been more up there ally, probably the same out come only with Hyundai barely winning IMO.
