Would definitely be interesting to see how this turns out.
I'm personally not a huge fan of mini, and I actually kind of dislike them. I've never felt that you really get your money's worth for them and some (obviously not all) of the mini crowd really bug me. I think I'd quickly get tired of every mini owner talking about this forever.
Even if it's close and mini loses, it will be good for them. Instead of being able to claim "we beat porsche" they can just say "we were this close at a fraction of the price".

Question is... do they really stand a chance? I can't really attest (personally) as to how close in handling these cars might be... but I can't imagine that the mini outclasses it nearly enough to make up for the power to weight differences.
I think the purpose of this race is not the race itself, so they will not care if they win or not. Instead, using the advertisement to make comsumer become aware of this car and going on their websites/dealerships to explore the car; creating more exposure.
The porsche has 7.5 lbs/hp less than the mini.
No way a mini can make up for that. But...it is a great car.

If this were on a very tight autocross course then the Mini would stand a chance. If this in on a large race track, Porsche is going to kill them. It's all an advertising gimmick anyways and as long as it brings attention to the brand, it worked. The outcome is irrelevant. Road Atlanta is pretty hilly. It is going to take a superior power to weight ratio to win there.
Yea sounds like they are skimming off Porche 911 legacy lol. Lame.... Owning a 911 means you have some cash. They don't look anywhere near the same. It's just stupid ad. Red paint whoop tee do lol. That's about it.
I tried looking where the race was going to be last night and figured that might be the trick mini had up their sleeves, but I now see that it's road atlanta and completely agree that mini will almost definitely lose.
It's obvious that mini has nothing to lose. They lose to a 911? Lots of cars have! If they somehow win, then even better for them. It's not like people are going to look down on them for losing.

An RX8 will walk away from a Mini on the track. I don't see anyway that it can stay with a 911, especially at Road Atlanta. Are those rims stock on any version of a Mini?

i'm just still shocked that the mini s only cranks out 172 hp. how can they not tip that up to 200 or more??
I thought the John Cooper Works Mini were 210-220HP?
oh that could be...i forgot they have the mini "s" and then the john cooper on top of that. so the question is, why are they flaunting the sub-par "s" when they could use the jcw to at least have a chance...? this is weird...

I can see the results now.
"Due to the Mini's engineer's elite gauge placement design skills in the car, they decided to mount a turbo boost gauge above the speedo that is smack dab in the middle of the dash. Due to the driver looking multiple times at those gauges distracting them from the road, the driver eventually overlooks a turn before looking back from the gauges to the road and goes off into a ditch, flipping the car followed by it going up in a burning inferno. "
Mini to Porsche: We were on fire baybee!

Because they want to get the publicity and appeal to the masses. Not everyone can afford to shell out $30,000+ for the John Cooper Works package.
