You can't run a V8 in LMP2. You are limited to a max of 6 cylinders and a max of 2 liters.

Porsches and Acuras are V8s. LMP2 does allow N/A V8s in the class.

Mazda had no real viable reason to run the V8 motor. They don't have a V8 in their production line-up.

Oops you're right. I was looking only at the forced induction side of it. I think while a V8 wouldn't be stressed with the pressures of boost, you'd probably have to run it at much higher rpms which has it's own stresses. A turbo can at least make up a bunch of torque. Then again who knows. The rules are set to (at least in theory) equal different engines out. Porsche runs their V8 up to 10,300 rpm and they are damn fast. I wonder how I got confused? I even knew Porsche was running V8's. Oh well I had to be wrong at some point in history!

I think for a race team it is better to run the v8, for pr reasons mazda is force to used the FI i4 but that doest make it the best choise

If the mazda is as fast as the intersport team, then it is at least competitive, the durability of the new chassis and engine is unknown tho. And would the 07 Lola chassis be "faster" than the 05 intersport lola? power output should be similar, DISI might give the Mazda an edge.

It "should" be a faster better car. These times are really worthless right now as these teams are setting up their cars and learning the ins and outs of them. Even these Porsche cars are new from last years cars.

Judging from the times alone, the LMP2 cars are almost a second faster than last year @ sebring qualifying. And it'll only get faster. The Acuras are already in the game, i cant wait to see what mazda brings to the table.

Well, I got back last night from Sebring testing and then the Rolex. I talked with someone from the LMP team at the Rolex (he was helping with the SpeedSource team) and he said he was both excited and disappointed with the possibilities in '07. Very excited about the new package, but very disappointed that the P2 cars were running as fast as they are around Sebring.

The new P2 cars are fast. In 2005 Lehto QUALIFIED at a 1:49.7 in his R8 P1 car and last year, even though Capello qualified the R10 at a 1:45.8, the second R10 only managed a 1:47.6 for second on the grid. So you can see that the P2 cars are down into P1 range of just a year ago.

Mazda has a real mountain to climb in front of them.

He also said that Mazda did want to use an existing block for the project, but upon talking to the experts, were convinced that it would just cost too much money and too much time to make an existing block capable and ended up settling on using the one selected. So it does sound like Mazda was looking to use as much Mazda in the engine as they could. We'll see how it goes.

On a side note, you rotary freaks, there were some screaming around Daytona this past weekend, you can see some images here. http://www.speedarena.com/gallery/ga...1%20Rolex%2024

A few samples. Enjoy

I wish someone could link the sound of the SPEEDSOURCE car in DAYTONA.
It sounded just like an F1.
Good work SPEEDSOURCE.
I really hope they can run all year, and get the championship for all of us Rotary Lovers.

They usually start testing there a month out or so but are probably testing the car elsewhere. Then again they could also be trying to get the car assembled still too.

per my discussions with BK team principal Mr. Bob Bach at Daytona, they will be testing the car in private test sessions in England soon. Jaime is going over to start the initial shake downs of the new car..
