F1 engines have to be piston, as stated by the FIA rules. Too bad....

That's OK. That's not so bad. Nascar fans have to be trailer trash. It's in the rules.

They also don't "own" Mazda . . . they own something like 33%.

Ford has veto power on everything Mazda does and owns controling interest. I'd say Mazda is pwned by Ford.

no one owns a publicly traded company 100%, whoever is the majority share holder controls the company. in Ford's case they are the majority share holder of Mazda, the rest of the 77% of stocks are divided between different parties and individuals. goto ford.com, mazda is described as a member of ford's family of brands

That was my point - they are a publicly traded company that is owned by the shareholders. And yes, I know that Ford is the majority shareholder. That doesn't mean that they are "pwned" - it's just a business relationship based on increasing profits. In fact, Ford's original motivation to buy into Mazda was probably based more on technology and mangerial skills transfer than anything.

um... all the major car makers are publicly traded companies owned by share holder.... i dont see how that makes mazda and ford's relationship special?

its far more than a business relationship based on increasing profit, Mazda is viewed as s subsidiary brand under the Ford family of brands not unlike Jaguar and Aston Martin. Ford has control of mazda's operations.

33.4% makes Ford Mazda's largest shareholder. Under Japanese corporate law once one owns more than 1/3 of the outstanding shares you automatically had a board seat, veto rights and the right to pick the executives. I'd say that amounts to the same thing as owning the whole company... without the drawback of the liabilities (which you get under Japanese corporate law).

You can find more detailed information by running a search, as I have posted detailed info and links several times before.

As far as Toyota making a move... I doubt it. Goes against the Japanese old school business politics. More likely is either more financial help from the UFJ - Tokyo Mitsubishi Banking Group (the banking part of the Mitsubishi Group conglomerate) or outside equity investment... probably from a foreign firm.

That is why Ford has left Mazda alone to do their own thing...of course after they saved them.

Oh, and shouldn't this discussion be about Hyundai entering F1 and not who owns Mazda?

Hmmm... This could easily have been a quote from a response to someone saying "Ha ha ha ha, Toyota is entering F1!!" from summer 2000. Just goes to show that having a ton of money doesn't mean you're going to do well. Toyota had shown improvement for a while there but last season they slipped back to mid-pack... Even a budget of a gajillion dollars (that's a scientific figure) doesn't mean you're going to be competitive.

I think they'd be better off just being an engine supplier, at least at first. Running a full team is comically, fabulously expensive and maybe they should just get a handle on what they're REALLY in for on the supplier side before they commit to a whole team.

Agreed. My point was just that they'll need a quarter billion dollars a year just to ALMOST keep up with Toyota's spending, and even then they're hardly guaranteed good results.

If they manage to even score any points in their first season, I'd be surprised. This assumes that all the other existing teams are still in the series in 2010... They'd be, what, the 12th team? Even Torro Rosso only scored one point this year, and the next two teams on the list scored none. I'll bet Hyundai F1 would spend two seasons in that neighborhood, regardless of how much money they spent... Easily in the last 3 or four teams at best. That's just the way it goes. Toyota finished last in their first season, if memory serves.
